BANGKOK, 17 September 2012 (NNT) -The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok has updated its security warnings to U.S. citizens in Thailand, following a spate of attacks and protests worldwide over a film made in the US deemed insulting to Islam.

According to the emergency message issued by the embassy, U.S. citizens are encouraged to maintain a heightened awareness and to keep a low profile when out in public, after four American personnel, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed in Benghazi, Libya, last week.

The embassy further stated that it is saddened by the deaths and elaborated that U.S Embassies in Egypt and Yemen have also faced protests last week.

U.S. citizens are advised to call the U.S. Embassy at 02- 205-4000 or visit the U.S. Citizens Service website at http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/ for more information, as the most updated information will be posted on the site.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Royal Thai Police has reaffirmed that all related agencies are stepping up security measures in the face of growing risks. Security personnel and Metropolitan police have been closely monitoring the situation for any signs of possible attacks. However, the police are not aware of any specific threat to U.S. citizens in Thailand at the moment,

It would surely be in the interests of Thailand to ban the proposed demonstration and march scheduled for tomorrow, which is likely to involve several hundred people and cause much disruption in the area near the US Embassy.

I would imagine that the Embassy Personel would would welcome a peaceful protest so they close for the day and get another paid day off.  With all they help I have gotten from this embassy I am about ready to join the protest.

Just spoken to Steven at Coffee Corner who went to Bangkok to renew his visa at the US embassy.

The embassy was closing at Midday today" because of a Muslim protest gatering in Lumpini park".

His appointment was at 09.00 so he was OK but many others (who had had their afternoon appointments cancelled and were calling on the 'off chance') were turned away.

Just spoken to Steven at Coffee Corner who went to Bangkok to renew his visa at the US embassy.

The embassy was closing at Midday today" because of a Muslim protest gatering in Lumpini park".

His appointment was at 09.00 so he was OK but many others (who had had their afternoon appointments cancelled and were calling on the 'off chance') were turned away.

And is it right that these demonstrations by a minority bent on causing trouble be allowed ?  In my view they should not!

If by demonstrating you break the law,then and only then you forfeit your right to demonstrate.

But as you say Nick there will always be the mindless few hellbent on causing as much trouble as possible.

I think religious gatherings/protests are always a potential tinder-box.

I agree that peaceful, legal demonstrations are, and should always remain, a democratic right.
