Driving licence
« on: June 26, 2018, 11:41:29 PM »
My 5 year driving licences have just expired! But I am in the UK until late November. When I re-apply will I have to start again or will they give another 5 years?

I forgot and let mine expire about 8 years ago,( I think it was about 4 months over ). As I didn't have my UK licence on me I had to retake the Computer test and sit through the 1 hour video ( plus the colour blind test, brake and spatial test ). I'm fairly sure if you have your Driving licence from the UK and explain you have been out of Thailand you will be OK .But as we all know every Test center can be different !!!

Silver,
Things change but at the Buriram Office they told me ok up to a year but if ober a year have to start from scratch. I renewed car lisence but didn't bother with bike lisence as I'd been unwell and wasn't riding. However, things improved greatly but when I went to renew 14 months had passed so had to do the video, test etc. Lady told me then that because over a year, couldn't renew.
So,mfingers crossed you may be OK if just a few weeks/months.

My 2 year bike and car licenses will expire early next year.

When I return to Thailand I will be on a tourist visa as it will be a short term visit.

Do you think it will be possible to extend my licenses on a tourist visa? or will I have have to start from scratch again at a later date.

No problem. You can apply on a tourist visa.

Why can't they let you study for the rules/computer test at home on Utube then just turn up for the exam.  I failed my test the other week 36/50.     The video being in Thai (naturally) leads your concentration to drift and several details I missed.  I went home,  half hour's study online, sorted. I went back two days later but gave up after three hours waiting because I had much to do elsewhere.
An alternative method was suggested  but that's not my scene.

Thanks Starman, that's a relief that i wont have to repeat the test.

Below is a link to the driving test questions that were  in the exam which i did 18 months ago (with a couple of exceptions). Not sure if they have changed the questions since

Have you not got a Driving Licence or licences already ??. If you have there is no need to take the test, just do the spatial test's and watch a Video . :)

I waved my Aussie license at them but to no avail.  If I had been sure this was enough to avoid the test I would have kicked up a suitably restrained fuss. I am flying back to Oz tomorrow to sort out accumulated  problems and will get an international permit so I am legal on my return. Then I'll try and get street legal here from a different test centre.  I'm pretty confident now but if I must watch this wretched video I'll take a pillow and have a little snooze at the rear of the class.
My advice, the road signs and general rules are pretty much standard internationally (not sure about N. America).  I failed on the details of where you can/can't park or overtake.Find these answers, write them on a small piece of paper and cheat.  Why not?  You'll still be in the top 1% of good drivers here.

I am on my 3rd round of licences now. The initial one year and then 2 renewals of 5 years. Only once have I been asked to sit in on the video. I have never been asked to take the 50 question test.

My Aussie licence was all they were interested in when I went in 12 months ago. Slept through the video and walked out with the 2 year licence.
