Buriram Airport 2017
« on: August 21, 2017, 01:04:02 PM »
Buriram Airport is to receive a major upgrade, due to a spike in aircraft arrivals.

A budget of 140 million baht has been allocated for the immediate project. However, passengers will not see any of the upgraded facilities, as the money will be spent entirely on tarmac facilities.

The parking apron will be increased to enable six Boeing 737-400 (180 seat) aircraft to park. Current space only allows for 2 aircraft. A second taxiway will also be constructed.

Does this mean it will have local international flights?

Parking for 6 B737's seems a bit excessive for BVF - BKK route.

There must be something going on. Having read the report I still don't buy into the idea that travel to Buriram is to do with motor racing and football.

Away teams barely bring 300 traveling fans with them, most of whom come on team buses,  and motor racing events are few and far between.

I believe that there has been a considerable increase in many Buriram residents' disposable income over the last few years and I think this is the reason for increased air travel on the Buriram-BKK route. The few times I have been to Buriram airport I have noticed that the amount of passengers is quite substatial.

That said, I don't think I have ever quite seen 180 people getting off of the 737s.Hence there must be something in the pipeline if the plan is to spend 140m on parking for an additioal 5 aircraft. That said, TIT.

Part of the expansion will be to do with taxiway and stand maintenance and re-surfacing requirements. I think the Thai airports have been under pressure lately to improve standards/safety etc. They may also be looking for additional overnight parking for aircraft. Those factors combined with increased services probably justify the spend and need for 6 stands. Probably a 10-15 year plan. Cheaper to do all together than add one every few years.

Joking aside, when was the last time any Thai authority planned 10-15 years ahead?

Well that's true but airports tend to be pressured by the airlines. As the Bangkok routes increase in demand there will be more pressure to have early morning and late evening flights. That in itself will increase demand for overnight aircraft parking, hence need for more stands. In turn the overnight parking means more aircraft servicing done at Buriram so again more stand space needed. Aircraft parking is also very lucrative for the airport.
The 2nd taxiway will be purely to build in redundancy whilst allowing for re-surfacing without loss of revenue.

Never seen a 737 in there yet......but have seen a full 180 seater  A320  on more than 1 occasion
