NEED HELP WITH BUYING SOD/GRASS PLEASE!!!
« on: November 06, 2016, 03:34:36 AM »
Hi Everyone.  I've read a few posts and tried to do as much research as I can but I have yet to find a reliable resource/company to purchase sod for about 1/2 a rai.

I am familiar with the "sod scam" where the come and deliver and install the sod and 2 days later all of the sod/grass is dead and they are gone...that's what I am trying to avoid in finding a 'reputable' company that offers a warranty/guarantee or at least regular service.

If you know of anyone/company that sells sod please let me know.

Thanks!

J.

From north of town going to the Elephant Circle, about 100 meters before the circle is a group of plant shops.  Turn left into the center, talk to the 1st business on the right (only speak Thai).  Tell them you want the same as the Falang with the fountain.

PM me with an email address and I'll send you a picture.

I was going to say the same thing.
The sods in Thailand that i have seen are MUCH thinner than the ones I used in Switzerland, and it gets a bit warmer here. Preparation is important, (not over-) watering also. If the sods have been in a stack for more than three days or so there will also be problems. If you have the same soil as me you may want to work in sand before levelling, even spreading a centimetre or two of sand on top for the final preparation.

Great. Thanks for your help.  We are in the process of the sand application for leveling...but thanks for the tips and I will visit the place you mention asap.

Do any of these guys offer any kind of warranty or maintenance?  I know I am kidding myself for asking but I have to ask....

I have done a couple of relitively small areas in my garden with sods bought from garden centers. And have had great success with them.
When you purchase do not acept any that have started to go yellow. They have been rolled up to long and probably won't recover. A dusting of bonemeal (if you can get it) on the finished tilth will help promote root growth. Ensure that all the joints are butted up tight when laying, and never let the sod completely dry out, as they will shrink apart leaving an unholy mess, leaving you  with more work having to fill the gaps. Keep up watering untill you can no longer lift a corner of the sod as the roots have taken hold.

1700+ sqm in total bought from Nakhon Nayok at an average of 15/16 Baht a sqm (plus transport cost).

Not Wimbledon but it looks green at times(I cut it quite low last week).

The place we used said they would replace any that didn't grow, however, we did not have any issues to find out if it was true.

BTW, as part of the installation price they do all the prep work such as leveling, killing weeds, etc.  Was worth the additional cost IMHO.

Guess one important issue is to kill all old weed. If not New weed will after a week come sneaking trough the New grass and give you a lot of extra work try to get rid off ( impossible ? :-) )
We asked the man who made the lawn if not needed to give old  weed some poison to kill the root systems but he said not needed.
They just used theird regular showels.
See now after about 3 weeks that it should have been done...

They people that did ours cleared and sprayed the area about a week before laying the sod.

If Bermuda grass here is the same as the stuff I used in Portugal, you can't raise it from seeds directly, you buy plants and plant them one at a time. Or you buy turf. Maybe different here.

I am still after Bermuda grass seed as it is a tropical grass and can be grown directly from seed and is suited to Isan.  Any seed can be grown successfully if it is suited to the conditions otherwise they wouldn't package seeds for sale.  I don't want to introduce weeds that often accompany rolled turf.
