Well, we've been back from Bangkok for over a week now,went with the intention of getting married, did not happen.
At the British Embassy, was told almost point blank(by Thai lady) that i could not have a Thai address, and need to go to the
computer over there and change it to an English address, i don't have one was my reply, you need to have an English address, but it's false information, OK, but i need help on that computer,young girl helped to change the address,to my previous address in UK.
Got the stamp of approval and of to MOFA to get translation,no problems all approved after four hour wait, we now have the papers to get married.
NO!!!  after a day's rest to recoup, we decided we would like to get married at Bang Lek, very popular place to be married, arrived at 6-45am first their, some more people arrived shortly after, at about 7-30am a lady comes and sits behind her desk, we approach  her
with all the paperwork which was all irrelevant, she asked my g/f if she had been married before, yes im a widow she said,did you have your husbands name, yes, you can't marry here, must have Maiden name, so back home it was.

So we go to Lamplaimat Amphor to change ID card and house book to maiden name, after when we married will have to be change again, the lady behind desk had a very loud voice that everyone in place could hear what our business was about, my g/f told me after, she was talking about problems Farangs were having with Thai ladies and things had change, we would have to phone her when the changes are in the system, and she would have to ask her boss what we have to do.          ( This is from a guy on T/V  14/7/2015)   The staff there were as confused as we were by the new system. After a long wait we were told that our 2 witnesses had to be people we work with, also that I had to be interviewed by a local bigwig before he could unlock the system and we would then need our certificates signed by a different bigwig. After some lengthy enquiries it was established the neither of these people were in the office yesterday.  and are still not married.

Yes, things have changed. We took the village big lady (neighbour) with us three years ago and had no problems. There are so many clever Farangs messing about with loopholes in the regulations, that things get worse by the year.
I was surprised when I did my first visa extension that they asked to see my freedom to marry certificate. It turned out that for a fee, you can get married without this piece of paper and thus people were getting extensions/ going to Savanakanet to get 'O' visas.
The idea that the whole stupid edifice of bureaucratic restrictions could be simplified will never occur to a bureaucrat.

We used a service called "Visa King" about 100 meters north of the US embassy opposite side of the road.  For 12,000 baht they did the leg work and provided certified translated copies.  Three hours later we had the marriage license in hand (did have to go to a GVT office to get it but with Visa King's escort). 

Yes you can do it yourself, but I was extremely pleased as think the 12K baht was well spent.  I don't have the contact number as I am out of town. 


But while I was satisfied with the marriage fees, when Visa King offered to get my retirement visa for me with a one time good deal of 77K baht, I declined.

It wasn't that I wanted to use loopholes but for the money, 8000 baht, the agent arranged all translations, got them certified at the MFA, brought them back and took us to the British embassy and the next day even paid for the taxi to take us to the registry office. It basically saved us a lot of hassle.

There are somethings that an agent can be good for.

Nookie, yes im to old to get married, but i just want to do right by my g/f, ie: make it easier for her when i kick the bucket,
the trip to Bangkok was not stressful in anyway for me,   . yes i could've used an agent, but would the agent of
 known, that ones g/f cant marry with her husband's name, has to be her maiden name.

My how things have changed in 40 years. Sure is amazing Thailand. My wife and I were initially married at the Thai Embassy in Germany. Only requirement my US passport, her Thai passport and a statement from each of us that we had not been married before. Marriage certificate issued in Thai, English, French and German. Guess what...the US embassy would not accept it for immigration purposes. Our next trip home we went to the Ampur in Lam Plai Mat and talked with the Nai Ampur, told him we needed to get married. He was quite surprised as he knew we had been married for a few years. I told him US embassy refused to honor the certificate and we needed one from Thailand. We were told we could not marry as we were already married. I asked what it would take to get divorced. He shook his head and said "OK you win." Signed the marriage register and out of the Ampur with certificate in hand in about one hour. No paper work required. THINGS HAVE CHANGED. Better or worse???
