Welcome mate. Caxton FX do a very good pre-pay cash card. They do a good exchange rate, marginally above the bank rate. Pre-load before travel and can also add additional at anytime online. £300 daily withdrawal limit. I used one over here for several years before moving over permanently and never had a problem.

Welcome BigMac
I wouldn't bring Baht from the UK as the exchange rate will be horrendous. There's loads of ATM Machines at the Airport for getting Thai Baht for when you arrive.
Your MasterCard will be accepted with no problem but if you want that extra bit of security you could always get yourself a Cash Passport like this one   http://www.cashpassport.com/1/en/uk/Buying-Your-Card1/

As they say in Scotland " Mony a mickle maks a muckle!"  :)

Wow, I almost agree with Nookie again.

My first time in Thailand I arrived with an expired ATM card, but was able to use my Credit Cards to get cash from Exchange Booths (I did not know/have pins for the credit cards).

So I would recommend using an ATM card and having a back up of at least one credit card.  There are too many horror stories of Expats having their life savings lost in Thailand.

BTW, welcome.

That's why the pre-paid cash cards are a good idea. You load with what you want to spend, can re- load via the Internet but can utilise them just live a visa or MasterCard at ATMs and for purchases. If stolen or cloned, access is only to the amount loaded and not your bank account.

Check into opening a Schwab investment account.  You get a free checking and ATM and there is no minimum deposit in either account.  They refund ATM charges and give a good exchange rate.

Howdy Mr. Mac,

I also live in the Prakhon Chai area.  I keep a bottle of Scots whisky around, even though I'm a sour mash guy myself.  Give us a shout when you get here and I'll stand you some drinks.

Also bring some valium ... it helps when going through the loops of bureaucratie here ... even at the ambassies ... they tend to make you go trough a nightmare of paperwork ... good luck my friend.

Welcome
If you haven't been to Thailand before, I'd suggest getting a copy of 'Thailand Fever' as it gives a good insight into 'Thainess'. Waterstone's or other good bookshops usually hold it. Time Out fishing resort/restaurant/bar is just outside PK Chai and a good place to meet fellow farangs.
