Buying a Truck

Once I fill out the "Request for Certificate of Residence" form do I have to go to KCI or can the local police dept issue the "Certificate of Residence"

If it is easier try your local cop shop OR amphur office but make sure that the LTD will accept them as I said before some will only accept a letter from immigration or embassy. If the locals won't do then you will have to go to KCI.

Thanks for the advice. Exactly why I want to have the truck in my name. Although together for 3 years (half of which she has spent in the UK on tourist visas) there aint never no guarantee in life !! My dilemma is, do I rent/borrow truck for 3 months whilst waiting for retirement visa conversion or buy day 1 or 2 and put in her name. I will ponder that one for a bit !!! .

Hi Freddy. I agree 100% with Nookies #3 reply post. NEVER put your vehicle in your wife's name. No exceptions !!

You are leaving yourself wide open to potentially completely lose a huge investment ... 1 million baht (or thereabouts)

I highly recommend that you rent a vehicle for a couple of months until you get organised. DO NOT be hurried or pressured into making a quick vehicle purchase registered in someone elses name.

I know this is a very negative post, but the harsh reality is ... if things go wrong down the track ... she WILL drive away with your truck if it's in her name.

The above is pretty sound advice. If needbe just buy a runner for 50k to 200k that you can walk away from by putting n your wife's name. When talking about 1.2m it is n your name.  Besidesyou needtime to research whats is on the market and best for you.

Just bought a car ast week in my name and the rules have just changed in the province of Buriram.  You must have a Tapien Barn (yellow family book), a valid passport and a valid Non "O" visa - Nang Rong wanted / insisted i have a business visa Non "B".  They didnt want to see my work permit or driving licence.  It took about one hour to complete and it was very easy.

I saw things differently, it isn't cheap paying every month, but if things go wrong both I and the wife lose a car. Better than paying outright.

Andy, just re-read your post and you refer to yellow family book, not house book. Sorry. Same question though, how do I get one of these. Do I get one individually or is it a shared document with the missus?

You have to go to your local Obbador Office and get them to order you a Tessian Ban (Yellow Book).  You'll need to get some proof from imigration that your are married and thats it.  The book says you legally live at the house and you have legal rights to it.  Don't let any body fob you off in the Obbador, as they don't like issuing them - but it's your right - also some Thai wifes don't like doing it, but that's life in Thailand.

There used to be a rule that you could only put the car in your name if it was paid for in full. Is that still so?

I refer to her as my wife but not legally married so hope Nookie is correct that this not the requirement. She's cool with me being on house book, family book or any book for that matter.

My thai GF insisted I had to have a Yellow book and made the enquiries from other falang partners. A visit to the local council offices and a interview with the tasseban leader ( a neighbour) resulted in the speedy issue of the Yellow Book
