Whilst I acknowledge it's inevitable that expats from different countries will ALWAYS have differences of opinion, it bothers me a lot that SO many topics get completely derailed into slanging matches.

I think many bickering members have missed the point of why we are all in Thailand.

The meaning of "expats" is a person who voluntarily resides in a foreign country with a different culture to their upbringing.

For WHATEVER reason, we have ALL chosen to desert the sinking ship (aka...our home country), and all jump into the same lifeboat and row to The Land of Milk and Honey to live.

This puts us all together in Thailand. In my eyes, this means that some part of our heart has said "bugger the old country ... too hard ... too expensive ... too many problems ... too many ugly women ... I think I'll give Thailand a go"

This should mean that we try to assimilate into the Thai lifestyle and culture, and become good Thai citizens. We have made the big decision to abandon our home country, so we really should also leave our Nationalistic differences behind.

(This is what we expect immigrants into our "home" countries to do)

We are no longer British or American or Australian or Dutch or Sth African or Norwegian or all the other nationalities I've not mentioned. Even the Thai's know this !!  FARANG !!  One word describes 300 Nationalities.

Pity our hearts can't do the same thing and all get along together.

When Thai's ask me "where you come from ...?"  I say "Buriram"

I suspect many members would instantly say their "home" country.

Yes ... healthy debate on the Forum is good ... but regrettably much of it is spiteful Nationalistic mudslinging. Gives me the shits.
Good post. No matter what the country of origin, people that have decided to pull up roots and  live in a foreign country (e.g. Thailand) are a special breed. Like it or not they probably have more in common than many care to admit.  Can't we all get along?

Great post Smoooth2. I come from Buriram too.
I always thought you come from England Dimple joe.

If you do come from Buriram you really should support Buriram United buriram_united buriram_united

Thank you for your advice on where my loyalties should be.

However, I remember that in the Selfridges Jewellery Heist thread reply #7 you said :-

“Yes you can ask it's not a secret,i come from the east end of London”

When you were writing as “Albert” in the Grand Slam thread reply #5 you said :-

“I don't really care who wins as long as it's not England. Come on   walesflag

In the BURIRAM UNITED thread reply # 249 you said :-

“Always nice to meet a fellow Celtic fan”

You have a Celtic FC flag as your Avatar.

Today in reply #16 above, you claim to be “A proud West Ham fan”.

I think one of us is confused don't you?

No i am not confused.

Yes i come from the East of London, don't mean i have to like England.

I will support anyone that plays England in any sport.

Yes i support Buriram as my Thai team because i live in Buriram,Celtic as my Scottish team,Barcelona as my Spanish team, and West Ham because i come from the area.

I have never stated that i come from Buriram, but your quote was "Great post Smoooth2. I come from Buriram too"

Which is why i said "I always thought you come from England Dimple Joe"

It was meant as a bit of banter.

Your the one that always seems to want to cause a problem, not me.

The Inter City Firm (I.C.F.) were a bunch  of hooligans and criminals(as you probably know) and any body willing to be associated with them is far from being a Hammers fan

I generally hesitate when asked where I come from and then mutter something like 'a lot of places'. I really don't feel like explaining all the complicated stuff I have done since leaving school.

I proudly answer I am from the United States of America.  I did not have a a choice of where I was born, but if I did I would pick the good old USA. Warts and all, still the prettiest gal at the dance.

Don't be a hater.

Agreed.
But unfortunately some people  change their origins to suit themselves

I don't always understand everyone's view point, but I like hearing other opinions and if an argument has merit I will reconsider my opinion. However, it would need to be a persuasive argument.

This is from Wikipedia so it must be right. I am sure WHU are proud of their fans.

ICF were not nearly as 'hard' as the Border City Firm.

The Inter City Firm (ICF) is an English football hooligan firm mainly active in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, associated with West Ham United and widely regarded as the first properly organised hooligan firm. The name came from the use of InterCity trains used to travel to away games.[1] The ICF was still active in 2009.[2]

Notable associates

One figure associated with the ICF was Cass Pennant,[3] who wrote on football hooliganism in the 1990s and 2000s. He is the subject of the film Cass, which was released on 1 August 2008.[4] In Congratulations You Have Just Met the ICF, Pennant, a black Londoner, maintains that the ICF was not racist or right-wing.

The main character within the film Rise of the Footsoldier, Carlton Leach is also associated with the ICF. He, along with Pat Tate, Tony Tucker and Craig Rolfe, later started to get involved in the criminal underworld in London. They strayed away from the dangers of football fights, to focus on selling drugs and taxing dealers. Pat, Tony and Craig met a brutal end, when they were murdered in their Range Rover down a farm road in Rettendon, Essex.
Calling cards

The ICF pioneered calling cards that were left on victims.[5] They read "Congratulations, you've just met the ICF." Leeds United Service Crew copied this from the ICF. This became, "Congratulations you've just met the famous ICF," when the ICF were the subject of a Thames Television documentary, Hooligan, which featured ICF members including Cass Pennant.
In popular culture

The ICF were the basis of Alan Clarke's 1988 film, The Firm. Gary Oldman plays Bex Bissell, the leader of the ICC - Inter City Crew. Members of the ICF were used as consultants on the film.[1] The 2005 film Green Street was based on the ICF, but not by name. Instead, the initials GSE (Green Street Elite) were used. The ICF make an appearance in Irvine Welsh's novellas Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance. The ICF are also suggested in the 2007 film Green Street 2: Stand Your Ground.
