Maka Bucha Day holiday in Thailand.

The Buddhist holiday of Sangha Day is called Makha Bucha Day in Thailand. It is observed in Thailand on the full moon of the third lunar month, which is usually the end of February or early March. In most other parts of Asia, Buddhist observe Sangha Day about a month later.

Sangha Day commemorates a day when 1,250 monks, all from different places and on their on initiative, spontaneously came to pay homage to the historical Buddha.

In Pali, Makha is the name of the third lunar month, and Bucha means "to venerate." On this day, Thai Buddhists gather at sunset in their local temples to participate in candlelight processions called Wian Tian. Ceremonies express appreciation for the order of monks founded by the Buddha and for the Three Jewels -- the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha.

Vendors asked not to sell alcohol beverage on Maka Bucha Day

BANGKOK, 26 February 2010 (NNT) – All vendors have been asked not to sell alcohol beverages on the occasion of Maka Bucha Day on 28 February. Any violators will be penalized by law.

Public Health Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit stated that, on the occasion of Maka Bucha Day, the ministry will implement the 2nd announcement of the Alcohol Control Act, which came into effect as of 5 July 2009, to strictly control the sellers, with the exception of hotel businesses, to halt their alcohol beverage sales during this religious day.

However, the vendors will be allowed to resume selling alchohol after midnight of 28 February, Mr Jurin affirmed.

Any one found guilty will be sentenced up to 6 years in jail or will be fined no more than 10,000 THB.

Admin, I can't let you keep on talking to yourself!  Any village shop will sell beer today, law or no law.  Even some bars, the obvious targets for the police, will sell it in teacups.  Do you really think you can keep a villager from his daily fix?  Though that's lao kao, of course.

Have to agree with IB here Admin.  I have just been to the village shop (one of 3 and they are all doing the same) to get some beer and ice as I have just run out.  No problems, and not because I am Farang, Thais were sitting there having a beer and the old ladies were hanig a Lao Khao before setting off to the Temple.

Guys, I was talking about tradition of this holiday.
It is not acceptable to drink on this day, of course many will drink alcohol as usually.
Its up to the people belief.

Saw this morning the fridges in the small supermarkt across the street were packed, the shelfs were stocked with wyskey, bin there 5 minutes ago, almost sold out, nice tradition. me like.

'Maka Bucha' day TODAY in Buriram Thailand.

In the late afternoon or evening, people go to their local temples for “Wien Tien” which is a kind of candlelight procession around the ordination hall or chedi.
I decided to go to a local Wat in Buriram,Thailand.
The real “Wien Tien” is with candles in the evening after the chanting which usually starts at about 7:30pm, there is a special pray later on many people walk around the temple three times in a clockwise direction.

Cambodians are more into Buddha that Thais, but no alcohol restrictions in either Phnom Penh or Siem reap

Some of these 'restrictions' here in LOS are crazy......Just look at the restriction on the hours you can buy alcohol

Agreed, especially when you go into Mackro and they tell you, you can only buy greater than 2 boxes of booze because it proves your a trader and not just a drunkard!
