"British nationals using the roads in Thailand should bear in mind that road laws and driving customs here are different from those in the UK and road conditions, driving standards and road traffic regulations can vary,"
I like that bit, especially the 'can vary' bit.
At a time when Switzerland had 5 million inhabitants, they were having over 1000 road deaths a year. Extrapolating this, same as in Thailand today. A decade or two of repression, education, engineering efforts on the roads and rigorous enforcement have brought the total down to about 327 I think. It's certainly not fun driving in Switzerland, just as much white knuckle navigation as in Thailand, radar checks in tiny villages, breathalysers at 6am, strict safety checks of vehicles.
One advance I appreciated was a machine that checked the distance between vehicles on the Lausanne - Geneva motorway, accidents diminished rapidly.
