Thailand's forthcoming friendly fixtures.

Man Utd.July 13,Chelsea July 17,Liverpool July 28.

In my honest opinion a complete waste of time, but the worrying factor is injury and fatigue.

But the biggest concern will be on the 7th August when an all star 11 take on Barcelona, and on that very day Buriram United are to scheduled to play Songkhla away.

Andy Wray Reports:

A Clash of Cultures. TOT SC 0-0 Buriram United

There was a clash of cultures at the pocket-sized TOT Stadium in Laksi this evening as one of the old guard of traditional small teams welcomed one of the new breed of fast- evolving provincial super-powers. TOT SC is effectively the works football team for the former telephone monopoly with some superficial image rebranding. They have been part of the old boys club of Bangkok-based teams since the dark days of Asian football when victories were gained by defaults, withdrawals and suspiciously one-sided results. Buriram United, on the other hand, are the very essence of a community football club. Their supporters are by far the noisiest in Thailand and their repertoire of songs and choreographed dance routines grows as every season passes.

With Buriram top of the table and looking likely champions, the tiny stadium was packed to the rafters and the contrast between the two sets of fans couldn’t have been starker. The home fans were generally subdued middle-aged men, many wearing casual apparel bearing the TOT logo, who greeted the announcement of the home team with gentle, polite applause. The visitors were everywhere and were generally young, lively and enthusiastic, and they greeted the announcement of the visiting team with uninhibited, rousing cheers. And there were huge numbers of female supporters amongst the legions of visiting fans but barely a handful amongst the home support.

DSC_3148The match was delayed for seven minutes when the officials were alerted to the fact that the visiting goalkeeper was wearing the same all orange kit as they were. How they didn’t notice this in the warm-up is beyond me, but that is perhaps the measure of the competence of Thai match officials. Thankfully, the keeper had a spare kit and reappeared in all grey. TOT’s towering, muscular centre-forward, Bas Savage, caught the eye, however, with his radical combination of one red boot and one blue boot.

The game kicked off at 0-0 and it became clear pretty quickly that the home team would be delighted if it finished that way. Despite being comfortably mid-table they set their stall out early on to sit deep, lump the ball long to Savage, and hope to pick up the pieces and snatch an undeserved win. They played three at the back in theory, but their two wing- backs rarely entered the opposition half and were defensive midfielders at best. In addition, they had two sitting midfielders forming a shield just in front of the back three. So, effectively, their back three became a back five, or even a back seven. And this was at home!

TOT occasionally burst forward but had no attacking threat whatsoever. Savage’s flick-ons went into empty space as his team-mates stood their ground and refused to support him and the visiting defence mopped up the loose balls easily and laid siege to the home defence. The visitors, interestingly, chose not to allocate their lofty centre-back, Osmar Barba, to mark Savage but instead chose the smaller but more powerful Tanasak Srisai to do the job. And an excellent job he did too, positioning himself perfectly to win the ball in the air frequently despite a clear height disadvantage. In my eyes, he was the man of the match.DSC_3155

It was glaringly obvious that the hosts were never going to score in a month of Sundays and several of their failed attempts to attack were greeted with laughter by the home fans. Buriram at least showed ambition even if they did lack the guile and thrust required to break down a stubborn defence. They clearly missed the absent Carmelo Gonzalez and

were over-reliant on the dead-ball accuracy of Theerathon, who roamed freely to very little effect in the first quarter.

The visitors completely dominated the match and the home defence was constantly having kittens as Theerathon delivered numerous free-kicks and corners into the heart of the box. The diminutive home keeper, Sornnarai Chamrurai, rode his luck and then some as a succession of shots and headers struck him on the way towards goal and somehow stayed out. Perhaps he should be given credit for his positioning but he certainly had a large slice of luck on more than one occasion. However, the visitors also deserve some criticism for the accuracy of their finishing and their inability to open up a very jittery defence and create clear opportunities.

And so the match ended as it started, goalless, and the hosts were delighted with their point. For the title-chasing league leaders, however, this was definitely two points dropped. It wasn’t the death of football but it did highlight a worrying trend in Thai football. I have seen more than my fair share of 0-0 draws this season and it is fast becoming the norm and the limit of ambition for smaller clubs. Sad to see and not something that will encourage football fans to attend matches here but maybe it’s simply part of the evolution of Thai football.

Reuters) - Controversial reforms must be implemented before Thai soccer officials can go to the polls, FIFA executive committee member Worawi Makudi told Reuters, dismissing the demands of the country's top sports adminsitrators to hold the election first.

Worawi's term as Thai Football Association (FAT) president ended on June 16 but scheduled elections were postponed after he failed to push through FIFA-backed reforms, which included slashing the number of eligible voters by more than half to 72.

On Tuesday, 108 of the 179 members signed a petition demanding the FAT bring forward the vote to July 23 in line with Thai sports law but Worawi said further talks on the reforms will take place on August 8 before the election on September 23.

"We have already decided that we can't hold elections immediately. We have to implement reforms before holding the next election," Worawi told Reuters via telephone on Wednesday evening.

A lawyer for the 108 dissenting clubs said on Wednesday they would hold their own elections in early August if the July 23 date was not met.

Asked if the election will be held this month, Worawi said: "We have to put in place reforms."

The country's top sports administrators disagreed.

"The Sports Authority of Thailand has nothing against the FIFA reforms but first we must deal with the matter at hand and under Thai sports law an election must be held once the incumbent's term comes to an end," SAT official Somporn Chaisongkhram told Reuters.

"Every sports association in Thailand should conform with international sporting laws.

"The Sports Authority of Thailand has nothing against the FIFA reforms but how can we confront the matter now when registration under Thai law hasn't taken place yet?"

Somporn said the SAT had instigated proceedings against basketball and boxing organisations in the past for failing to follow their guidelines.

PRESENT MATTER

Critics of Worawi have questioned the timing of the implementation just before an election.

The 61-year-old, who lost to Sheikh Salman Bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa in the Asian Football Confederation presidential elections in May, said he is simply following FIFA guidelines.

The world governing body have been vocal in the case, successfully putting pressure on fourth tier Thai club Pattaya FC to drop a court injunction last month that blocked discussion about the reforms.

Attempts by Reuters to establish FIFA's latest position on the case went unanswered.

Pattaya said they only dropped the court action once Worawi's term expired, theoretically putting him out of office but he still appears to be calling the shots.

"We had to delay the election because of the court injunction but now the date is set," said Worawi, who will hold a news conference on Friday.

The SAT said they hoped the more pressing issue would be discussed on Friday.

"Worawi has the right to express his opinions and hold a press conference explaining what it is he would like to see happen in terms of the election," Somporn said.

"But the reforms are far off whereas the present matter is the matter of dealing with the election according to Thai sports law." (Writing by Patrick Johnston in Singapore; Editing by Greg Stutchbury)
