Well following hard on the heels of the Japanese Airlines,ANA & JAL decisions to ground their fleets of 787's,now at last the American Regulators have taken the bull by the horns & grounded them worldwide......But Boeing are still 'crowing' the plane is safe........Would you fancy flying on one???
I guess BigBus will be the oddman out!!!!

Yeah, Lithium Ion batteries FFS!  (Where do you suppose they're manufactured?)

The B787 is apparently the first aircraft certified for the use of such batteries.  I'm actually surprised that they ever got the "go ahead" to use them, as the FAA has such strict limitations on even the carriage of lithium type cells.

I remember when the first Nickle Cadmium's were introduced (long ago 555), and the birthing problems that were encountered with their initial use in aircraft.  eg. "Memory retention" and "thermal runaway" fires and malfunctions.   Finally got those figured out, tough!  They're also a major pain in the @ss, as far as maintenance goes.

I haven't read the "AD" on the B787 battery, but the requirement to comply could be as simple as a visual and possibly a voltage check, before each flight.  Meanwhile, Boeing is trying to connect the dots and see if these incidence's are connected to a specific supply chain.

Ahhhh...growing pains of a newly introduced technology!

Thankfully, no injuries to passenger's or personnel thus far, and hopefully none in the future.

You are somewhat behind with the news....The American people who have stripped down the battery have said it is not the battery which is the problem, they are now investigating the American company that makes the charger.
What about the fuel valves??

http://www.navytimes.com/news/2009/07/navy_seal_minisub_072709w/

The U.S. Navy tried to use lithium ion batteries in a SEAL minisub (see link). The batteries caught fire while recharging the batteries and destroyed the submarine (in port, luckily). The engineers like the lithium ion batteries because of the power density, but the technology does not appear to be mature enough for submarines or airplanes (IMO).
