I made the mistake of staying in hotels at first, you are better off getting a monthly rental of a house about 8k, sure other members have some info on this

3k per month house rent plus a similar amount for Lao Khao should leave you Quids in

Why are you staying in cheap hotels?   :)

Been planing to rent a house next winter, but most of the rentals ive seen have a minimum of 3mounths and no swimingpool.

I can stay at my wifes family in khu mueang. But then i will go insane forsure.

my only option atm is hotel :P

How many of the average Thais living a simple life earn 30,000baht / month. If you must referance living simple thai life then try 10,000baht / month!
30,000baht / month or 1000baht / day is enough for farang to live simple for sure but leaves nothing for flights home or a new car when the current one gets tired etc. Something always crops up.

Ahab is not here yet or coming for a couple of years which could see changes in financial needs at that time.

I concur with the above.
The question is do you want to live or exist here???

Some people have worked hard stressful lives
and need a bit of comfort at their age, but as stated everyones needs are different.

A lot of good input and everyone has different requirements. To clarify I would like to live on a budget of 30K per month, but will actually have an income that is considerably more than that. I will also have money set aside for any emergencies.

The rest of my income (over and above the the 30K) will be used for travel and other extras. The 30K is for food and other basic living expenses. Based on the responses I think I will be doing just fine. Now all I have to do is get my son out of school so we can move.

so after all, its not just 30,000 baht a month to live in Isaan,
after reading your last comment, I can assure you it is possible to live on 30,000 baht a month not including all the extras that need/want to pay. winkboy
The key is to think and buy same Thai and look at the Baht currency as your main and not your foreign exchange rate and costs overseas in your origin country.

Good luck. sawadi

If you HAVE to live on 30k per month it can be done (I know someone living on 8,500 Baht).

However, if you do have the financial choice  I would avoid trying to live 'like a Thai'. Nothing wrong in drinking at home, or in the Moo Ban, but I will no longer ear some of the Thai crap served up in the vilages, road-side or many 'restaurants'.  My favourite Thai dish is Pad Krapow but I would rather pay 80 Baht from a known, decent restaurant, than 40 Bt at a village shop where the inferior wuality pork ends up in the dog!

Cut your cloth if you need to, but don't settle for infetior products if you can avoid it. Too many Thais still think that serving up poor quality at a cheap price = value. It does not, it = crap!

1000 baht a day is easy to live on and that's even eating decent food aswell... I'm in the same boat as you and I save the rest of my money..  Just don't be a keg head like a few over here and you will be ok..

80 Baht for a krapao dish is a very expensive price and I cannot justify a place charging this price (today's prices), I agree with you there are many restaurants serving low quality food but back to our subject, many/most of the Thai local restaurants selling krapao at 35-50 Baht MAXIMUM and its DELICIOUS! (Including Kai dao of course) :) sawadi

Admin you are correct. My monthly spending "budget" is 30K, but we will have additional funds for emergencies, travel, and savings. I appreciate the replies and information. It appears that is can be done easily and I am looking forward to the move in a couple of years.
