so all the more reason to brew your own. I am making 20 liters a month now, and am aiming for 100 liters as soon as I get the temperature problem sorted. Illegal? yes, I might get a 200 Baht fine, meaning that I may have to pay the boys in blue for the favour of letting them 'confiscate' my beer.

ok, when I feel confident about the quality we'll organise a  tasting (results variable at the moment due to high temperatures, will buy a freezer and get the temps down to 20 - 23 C.). Aiming for a lager at the moment, better than Chang, still too expensive brewing small quantities.

Good luck with your venture. For what its worth, I think its a very good idea (for small acorns.. and all that).

Just off for a pint of Harvey new Georgian Dragon ale

Section 5 of the Liquors Act (1950) states that it is illegal for anyone to brew their own alcohol, or even have the equipment to do so.

The maximum penalty for contravention of this section of the Act is six months in jail, or a fine of 5,000 baht, or both.

If the offender sells the liquour, the maximum penalty rises to a year in jail or a 10,000 baht fine, or both.

Those are the maximum penalties and can be imposed for making and / or selling distilled alcohol (spirits).

The maximum penalties for brewing or fermenting alcohol - wine or beer, for example - are lower: 200 baht for making it and 5,000 baht for selling it.'

If he got 30 000 Baht fine he must have been very naughty, possibly sending people blind or not inviting the local police for a sampling. I can only explain the relatively high prices for beer in Thailand to some kind of 'Monopoly' (or maybe another word beginning with 'M') not welcoming competition. I believe the big breweries are in the hands of the Chinese-Thais.

If they De-value the baht things will really go up!  I was talking to the wife about the 300bt per day and she was happy to see it saying how great it was. I explained to her that if the 300bt pd  rise cost her 50bt per day in extra expense she would be losing money in the end.
   Going from say 250bt pd to 300bt pd = 50bt x 6 days x 4.5 weeks = 1350bt
   50bt x 30 = 1500bt per month

At the very best people are breaking even. But the Thai / Asian concept of its all about the payoff baffles me.  My mother in law spent 30,000 baht farming rice last year. When it was all said and done she walked away with 40,000 baht and rice for the year.  She would have made more money working at 7-11 and buying rice to eat for 6 months.
