241 die on roads in first 4 days

A total of 241 people were killed and 2,382 others injured in 2,167 road accidents over the first four days of the “seven dangerous days” of the New Year celebration, Thursday to Sunday - the Road Safety Centre reported on Monday.


Buri Ram had the biggest road death toll at 16, followed by Nakhon Sawan (13).

Chiang Rai had the most injuries at 88, followed by Nakhon Sawan with 81 people injured.

More than half of those killed or injured were of working age. Drunk driving and speeding were the major causes of the accidents, the report said.

On Sunday, Jan 1, there were 1,605 road accidents, killing 76 people and injuring 1,782 others.

Figures show a downward trend over the past four years, from 401 to 350.

Let's hope that the last 3 days don't continue at the same pace as the first 4.

These numbers are increasing with the passage of years. Out of over 1.2 million worldwide, 90% of the deaths are caused in the countries that have low or middle level incomes.

India has the highest number of road accidents in the world ( best not go and live there then  ) and according to statistics New Zealand is among world's worst for road fatalities per capita

So things could be a lot worse

A total of 282 people were killed and 2,544 others injured in 2,783 road accidents over the first five days of the “seven dangerous days” of the New Year celebration, the Road Safety Centre reported on Tuesday.


Buri Ram had the biggest road death toll at 16, followed by Nakhon Sawan (15).

Nakhon Sawan had the most injuries at 100, followed by Chiang Rai with 99 people injured.

Chaiyaphum is the only province with no reports of road accidents while 13 others report no road-related deaths, the centre reported.

The peak time for road accidents was between 4pm and  8pm. Drunk driving and speeding remain the major causes of accidents,  the report said.

The five-day road toll count is from Thursday to Monday
