Norway Camp Shooting: 'As Many As 30 Dead'

As many as 30 people are feared dead in a shooting at a Norwegian youth camp after a bomb hit the capital Oslo killed at least seven.

Shots were fired by a man dressed as a police officer at a youth meeting of the ruling Labour Party in Utoya - an island on the outskirts near the capital.

An eyewitness reported seeing between 25 and 30 bodies.

Norwegian police said they thought there could also be explosives on the island.

Around 600 people were believed to be taking part in the summer camp - most of whom were teenagers aged between 14 and 18.

Police said that Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg had been due to attend the event.

One man was arrested after the incident - he was described as tall and blonde, and spoke fluent Norwegian.

Sky sources reported he was shot and wounded during the arrest.

Police said they suspected he was linked to the bombing in Oslo.

The shooting took place on Utoya island - the site of a summer youth camp

Emilie Bersaas, 19, was on the island when the shooting started and said that people started running and screaming when they heard the gunfire.

"People are very shaken up as we do not know who is fine and who is not," she said.

"There are a lot of people I do not know anything about.

"It was terrifying - at one point, the shooting was very close to me and hit the building I was in.

"The people in the next room screamed loudly."

Broken glass and debri remain at the entrance of a government building damaged by a bomb blast which took place outside the Norvegian Prime Minister's office in Oslo, on July 22, 2011.

The bomb attack struck on Friday afternoon near government and media offices

Sky's security editor Sam Kiley said a specialist swat team had carried out the arrest of the gunman.

"The fact they captured him alive is a major breakthrough because they will be able to establish from him if it is an ongoing attack," he said.

"The intelligence community has been expecting that a Mumbai-style attack has been imminent since a year ago.

"The worst-case scenario is not just multiple attacks in one country, but in several countries.

"So we can expect to see a rise in preventative security."

Security expert Bob Ayers said there are only a limited amount of things that can be done to protect people.

"The only thing (authorities) can do is interfere in the planning phase before people are killed.

"If you can not do that, you have to be prepared to react rapidly."

Thats true many was thinking of muslims, but norwegian police, tv and "authoreties" begged all people to let police investigate and get some answers, before put the blame on to anyone. Luckily one person has been arrestet, a native Norwegian, think rightwing. Seems like death toll now is more than 80. This is the worst incident of violence in Norway since WW2.

Well this is truly awful and my thoughts are with the victims families and may the deceased RIP.

However when I first heard of this incident,  my first thoughts were Muslim extremists again and this is why.

My first recollection of islamist atrocities is when they slaughtered 60 odd tourists in Luxor back in 97. Since then all major incidents be it Mumbai, Bali, London, Madrid or New York have been attributed to Islamist extremists, so why would one not automatically assume, oh, the are at it again.

The best way to avoid people thinking along these lines is to cease perpetrating these crimes and then perhaps people will not automatically connect all similar acts with Muslims.

Well that's my fourpenn'oth!

OK, then how many were surprised that the camp shooting was not Muslims?

Personally, I thought the bombing were/are Muslims, and the shootings something else.  The camp shootings did not seem to be a Muslim event, seemed more of an angry white guy thing.

There is a saying that where guns are not allowed, it is best to carry a gun.  Would have helped those on the island.

you mentioned london and new york in your post, not one single person has been convicted in a court of law for the LONDON BUS BOMBING,but if you look closer you could be forgiven for thinking that maybe it was a act by the BRITISH GOVERNMENT itself,
ie MI5_MI6.
and with new york most people around the world now except that the AMERICAN GOVERNMENT (C.I.A.)was guilty of the TWIN TOWER bombings.
and i am sure that there are many more acts of terrorism around the world that most people just blame THE MUSLIMS for, because it's a easy thing to do,but maybe we need to look closer to home
U.K and AMERICA the biggest terrorist of all.

Correct that max jail in Norway is 21 years. (and if he "is nice" can get a discount).... spot1.Norway has no death penalty. But if jury think he can come out in the streets doing same one more time, he can be comittet to asylum for rest of life. Hopefully other criminals in jail will "take care" of him long before 21 years. The island shooting was on norwegian labour partys summercamp. From my small city 12 young people was attending, 1 not physically hurt, 3 hurt and one young lady missing --AND SHE WAS MUSLIM...

Breivik claims to be a Christian, though I know most, if not all, Christians would disown him.  His platform was anti-Muslim immigration (all mixed up with the Knights Templar and goodness knows what else).

I think the nicest thing anyone can say about him is that he was quite, quite mad 100%.  The worrying aspect, of course, is that nobody suspected he was like this... and one just like him could be living down your street.... you'd never know.
