Icelander in Thailand Accused of Providing Drug Mule
SCANDASIA.COM 2011-06-08

Brynjar Mettinisson, who is currently in custody in Bangkok on suspicion of drug violations, is accused of having attempted to find a drug mule for an Arabian man, with whom he was in online contact, to smuggle one liter of methamphetamine in liquid form to Japan.

This was reported by Chamnarn Viravan, the primary Consul for Iceland in Thailand. He has not received a copy of the police’s report but has been in contact with Mettinisson’s Thai girlfriend, Fréttabladid reports.

Viravan’s account of the events differs significantly from that reported in the Icelandic media up until now.

Mettinisson’s mother explained last week that her son had been arrested along with a stranger from Australia (other reports say he was an acquaintance), who was carrying drugs while Mettinisson had none and maintained his innocence.

However, she pointed out that she may have misunderstood her son’s girlfriend.

Viravan said Mettinisson’s girlfriend had told him she had overheard a conversation between him and the Arabian man on Skype. Mettinisson was under the impression that the drug was legal and that it would be delivered to a physician in Japan.

He was supposed to receive USD 2,500 (ISK 280,000, EUR 1,700) for finding someone to deliver the drug. Mettinisson found someone willing to do it, who proved to be an undercover policeman.

He and the Arabian man, who carried the drug, decided to meet the mule at the Grand Mercure Fortune hotel in Bangkok on Monday last week where they were arrested.

Mettinisson was sentenced to three months in custody. Viravan has provided him a lawyer and they are supposed to meet this week. The trial is scheduled for early August.
