Unwanted pregnancies increase but legalizing abortion unlikely

BANGKOK, 29 May 2011 (NNT) - The Women’s Health Advocacy Foundation expressed concerns over the increasing number of unwanted pregnancies, while legalizing abortion in Thailand was unlikely.

According to the Department of Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health, over 10,000 teenage girls got pregnant in 2009 and the number was increasing.

The Women’s Health Advocacy Foundation said it was difficult to push for the legalization of abortion in the Kingdom as the practice went against Thai culture and religious belief.

Currently,a woman can get legal abortion only under three circumstances: when she has been the victim of rape, when the mother’s health is in danger, and when she is younger than 15 years old.

The Foundation explained that 45 percent of women with unwanted pregnancies got illegal abortions, which was very risky to the health of the women and many had died as a result of the substandard procedures.

It added many developing countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam, and Nepal had legalized abortion for women who are under 3-month in pregnancy.

The Foundation suggested preventing unwanted pregnancies was the best way to solve the matter; providing knowledge to students, giving birth control service, and giving women with unintended pregnancies options and guidance.

Legalised abortion does not seem to matter

A neighbour who found herself pregnant and not wanting the child was advised to go to a clinic in Khorat. She was only about 1 month pregnant, and seemingly the abortion can be carried out with just an intravenous injection She went last week only to find there were so many people awaiting abortions that she was given an appointment for later this week. The cost 3000bt.

I doubt that Khorat is the only place carrying out these illegal abortions - the numbers countrywide must be staggering!

The UK do about 180,000 - 200,000 a year which has about the same population as Thailand .If you are poor, abortion  is not to easy to obtain in Thailand ,not so if you are a Hiso young girl that has made a mistake  ::)

What are you talking about? Its a matter of culture, usually abortion is not allowed and the young couple get married sooner than later. sawadi

It is not always like that Admin. In the villages yes, but when the girl goes away from home and gets herself pregnant, often through a one night stand, that is when she needs an abortion.

in the case of my neighbour, they have 2 kids already and can't afford to look after them, let alone any more!

I'm talking about how many young 20 year old girls are there in Pattaya now working bars because they have an unwanted child to take care of back in the Village. The argument is whether you are pro or anti abortion.I'm pro abortion and think they should be available to any girl that wants one.

Simple  :)

So you think if a young girl is clever enough to concieve, she is therefor clever enough to make a life changing(ending) decision. I'm not so sure?

When I was 18 I got my girlfriend pregnant,we decided we was to young to start a family and she had an abortion. If we hadn't I'm sure my life would have been very different. At least we had a choice and not some old lady in the village with a knitting needle or dumping the baby off with Mum,heading of to BKK or pattaya to send a few k home every month because the boyfriend would sooner drink beer with his mates than to commit to a family life and get a job.Just give these young people a choice, that's all I'm suggesting !!!
