Cactus
« on: April 06, 2011, 11:57:30 AM »
Just thought I'd post a picture of my cactus. The flowers only seem to last for a day before dying off. I'd be happy if someone knew the name, as I could then read up about it. Thanks.
Before anyone says it, I know the daughter has her shoes on the wrong feet.

I don't know which genus this is;  it's a fairly common type, because they're very easy to grow.  I have several just outside my window.  Try Echinocactus.  Mine flower at night, one night only as you say;  they may last until the sun is up.  Most night-flowering cacti have white flowers;  the best-known here is the one which bears Dragonfruit (or Pitaya).

I appreciate your reply Isanbirder. I'll give it a Google with those names and see what I come up with. Thanks.

Im afraid it isn't an Echinocactus;  I googled it. The main website on cactus identification has almost 50 pages of photos, and I jibbed at that.

It is an 'Echinocactus'. This is the new name. It was called Trichocereus. What strain of 'Echinocactus' it is is incidental really, as I just need to know about it in general. Thanks once again.
This is the best example of the flower I could find. http://www.erowid.org/plants/show_image.php?i=cacti/trichocereus_bridgesii_flower1.jpg

Well done!  Is the plant really that shape?  Many cacti have flowers which look very similar.

Like you Isanbirder I trawled through picture after picture and basically gave up in the end. I think it's an hybrid and I'll just stick with what I came up with and leave it at that. Thank you for your assistance.
