Fear of nuclear meltdown in Japan

There has been an explosion in one of the powerplants in fukushima Japan. Hope for the best but it looks like there will be radiation leaks from this event. It depends about the winds now where it shall spread.

Its 100 times more powerful than Chernobyl, but a different type of station completely and much more safe (I am told!)

There are several reactors in Fukushima daiichin area and nuber 1 had the problems now. None of them are 100 times more powerfull than tshernobyl... do your math Dave

Now they are using seawater for cooling the unit, and seems like they can prevent the coremeltdown.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's top government spokesman says a partial meltdown is likely under way at second reactor affected by Friday's massive earthquake.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Sunday that radiation at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima briefly rose above legal limits, but it has since declined significantly.

Three reactors at the plant lost their cooling functions in the aftermath of quake and tsunami because of a power outage.

Some 170,000 people have been ordered to evacuate the area within 12 miles (20 kilometers) of the plant.

The plant is 170 miles (270 kilometers) north of Tokyo.

Reports of 'hundreds of bodies' keep coming in.  I guess the eventual death toll will exceed 20,000.

An interesting side note reflective of the Japanese culture amongst this great tragedy. The looting is nil....as one would expect nearly everywhere in such a catastrophe. Expect the ever-tough and organized Japanese to be up on their feet before long. Think about the massive problems that they are dealing with....
