Controversial World Cup ball defended by developer
Published: 2/06/2010 at 07:52 PM
Bangkok Post: Online news: Sports

Stars from England, Brazil and Italy have joined forces to criticise the controversial new ball to be used in the World Cup, but the developer insists there will be no cause for concern once the tournament gets underway in South Africa.

The Adidas 'Jabulani' ball has caused concern at training camps across the globe as the world's best players try it out ahead of the start of the World Cup on June 11.

It is believed to have an unpredictable swerving movement which makes its hard for goalkeepers and strikers to anticipate its direction in flight.

England goalkeeper David James says the ball is "horrible", Brazil forward Luis Fabiano calls it "weird" and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon fears its "unpredictability" could ruin the World Cup.

However, Dr Andy Harland, who developed the ball at Loughborough University's Sports Technology Institute in England, said much of the criticism was due to the unfamiliar effects arising from teams playing at altitude as part of their pre-World Cup training.

"I've seen nothing that's concerned me," he told Sky Sports News. "This ball has been around since December and been used since then around the world with very few comments.

"Teams have gone to altitude and you've seen comments come out in those circumstances.

"We've said all along it would affect the ball, but it should be said whichever ball you play with at altitude is going to be affected."

The ball is billed as the roundest ever made, a quality which would make it less stable in the air if not for a series of grooves on the surface designed to reduce aerodynamic problems.

Harland said not one team had contacted him to discuss the ball and added he was not surprised by the criticism.

"It's not entirely unexpected," he said. "Before every tournament players come out and voice their opinions.

"There are no secrets about this ball. The ball is designed to allow the very best players in the world to exhibit their skills."

Police plan gambling crackdown
Published: 3/06/2010 at 12:00 AM
Bangkok Post: Newspaper section: News

Police are planning tough measures to crack down on football gambling and to deter youths from betting on matches during the month-long World Cup 2010, which kicks off on June 11.

Illegal football bookmakers would be targeted and police officers found to turn a blind eye to the gambling or who are involved themselves in gambling could face disciplinary action, Metropolitan Police Bureau commander Santan Chayanont said yesterday.

City police will also be keeping an eye on loan sharks who are expected to hit the streets during the World Cup, when gamblers, especially students, are heavily in debt as a result of betting.

"A friend of mine owned a gold shop," Pol Lt Gen Santan said.

"He ended up losing both his business and his family because of football gambling."

Authorities in other provinces are also preparing to tackle the football gambling problem as the World Cup draws near.

In Songkhla's business and tourist district of Hat Yai, Pol Col Suranart Wanawak, acting chief of district police, said his officers were compiling a list of illegal bookmakers ranging from those who have opened gambling shops to those who accept bets by phone.

In Sa Kaeo's Aranyaprathet district, immigration authorities at the Ban Khlong Luek border checkpoint searched tourists re-entering Thailand from Cambodia and found copies of online football gambling leaflets on almost every traveller. The leaflets were handed out by casinos in Cambodia.

Meanwhile, Pol Col Surachet Hakpal, head of the anti-human trafficking unit at the Crime Suppression Division, said the unit was taking action against a ring that was sending Thai women to work in a brothel in South Africa, the host of the World Cup.

A recent survey by the Wisdom Society for Public Opinion Research of Thailand found more than half (57.1%) of students who have bet on a football match said they knew they were breaking the law.

Depending on how the brackets play out after group play, I would expect Brazil, Spain, Argentina, and France to survive to the the final four. Mind you, the parity of competition has vastly drawn itself....so expect surprises in group play and even into the subsequent rounds. Troublemakers will be Portugal, Algeria, Cameroon, Slovenia, Mexico, Uruguay, Korea, and England {even if they might be a perennial favourite, I don't believe they'll fair well}.
