Highway to Ubon Ratchathani
« on: November 07, 2019, 04:52:09 PM »
Haven't driven Hwy 226 east of Buriram before; wondering about condition of highway and likely length of time to travel from Burirum to Ubon Ratchathani (or vice versa).

Or, if there is a different (quicker, preferred) route recommendation?

Thanks for your input.

From Kap Choeng and Prasat we take the 24. Dull lane divided highway all the way. I'm sure the 226 would be interesting but have never used it east of Surin. Maybe going to the Ubon airport next week for a pickup.

The 226 is now a nice road with 4 lanes in most parts. The Sisaket ringroad has also been vastly improved. I would estimate it would take about 2 hours driving between Surin to Ubon.

Yes, 24 is a snap.  The question is . . how is 226 between Buriram and Ubon?  Or, would we better off adding a few miles and taking 24?

Thats a shot you have to call. We have never taken the 226 from Surin to Ubon. Living in Kap Choeng the 24 is the the best option. Besides the 24 is a dull divided carriageway all the way from the 2 over to Ubon where as the 226 is a works in progress. Saying that if I was further north I would have no problem taking the 226.

For a similar reason as GL, I only use the 226 when traveling regularly between Sisaket and  Ubon or occasionally  to Surin/Buriram . As I suggested above, there no major problem areas between Ubon & Buriram.

I have just been told that the trip to Ubon airport is on for the 26th. By Google its 199 km for us and the plan lands at 0830 am which means we have to depart about 5 am.

Let me know how that works for you.  I'm dropping off visitors there on the 28th before heading for an appointment in Lam Plai Mat.

Did the trip today. What a hull. Went 24 and came back 226. There is good and bad for both routs. IMHO its 6 of one and half dozen of the other on your choice. I would say if you're closer to the 226 take it but if your closer to the 24 take it. You need to drive both and judge for yourself.

Have now driven both, as well.
From Nang Rong area to Ubon Ratchathani, strongly prefer 24, except for the last NE/SW section. There, it has 2 lane and road construction.  226 is still a work in process.
Not really a good connector between 24 and 226 except Nang Rong/Buriram
Was very surprised to learn of direct UBP - BKK flights @ Ubon airport.
