Suvarnabhumi sets sites on joining world top ten Airports
The Nation: 30 Sep 2008
SUVARNABHUMI airport ready to join elite, pledges aot

Airports of Thailand insists that Suvarnabhumi Airport will become one of the world's best 10 aviation gateways next year, despite the slight drop in passengers in its second year of operation.

"Higher jet fuel prices which led to the global economic slowdown and domestic political conflicts have affected the figures," Serirat Prasutanond, manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport and acting president of Airports of Thailand, said yesterday.

Passenger counts have reached 38.6 million in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year and should hit 41.14 million when it ends this month.

The new airport welcomed 41.93 million passengers in its inaugural year.

Authorities have said higher fuel costs have forced airlines to cut flights, while visitors were scared away by the state of emergency imposed temporarily in Bangkok this month.

Launched on September 28, 2006, the airport's two runways can handle up to 45 million passengers, 76 flights per hour and 3 million tonnes of cargo per year. A total of 111 airlines are operating out of Suvarnabhumi, with 97 carrying passengers and 14 dedicated to freight.

The airport has accommodated 2.42 million tonnes of cargo shipments - 1.23 million in the first year and 1.29 million this year.

In the past year, AOT added 116 toilets to bring the total to 1,580. More direction signs have been put up and the one-stop service centre was opened. During rush hours, the swing-gate system has been implemented to facilitate higher flight frequencies.

"The Airport Service Quality scores have improved due to those measures. But, in the third year, we still have a lot to do, including improvement of the baggage trolley system as well as safety measures. More closed-circuit TV monitors will be installed and the check-in area will be partitioned," Serirat said.

The airport is waiting for the National Economic and Social Development Board's review of the Bt73.7-billion Phase II plan.

The new airport will struggle to get into the top 10. Th reason for this is that its so user friendly and not well designed. Taxi rank system is very poor ,too many touts in the arrival area, not enough public toilets. long queues at immigration with desks not open. The list could go on!! Its a poor design with no imagination to improve services in fact not much better than the old airport as far as I am concerned.
This should have been  a great advertisement for coming to Thailand, its turned out to be a white elephant. Thaksins grubby hands written all over it, corrupt practices and poor service. It will not be in the top ten for a long time to come as far as I can see.

If PAD continue to threaten to take over the airports in Bangkok ie. the international hub of the country. Thailand will lose even more as the airlines will use another hub in the area Cambodia,Vietnam or the second airport in Kuala Lumpur.
Most of these major airlines are going to require a guarantee from the Thai government that the possibility of this happening again is virtually zero. Personally I don,t think the Thai government can do that as they are not in control.

Suvarnabhumi airport was rated the world's 5th best airport of 2008 by the Geneva-based Airports Council International (ACI), acting Airports of Thailand president and Suvarnabhumi director Serirat Prasutanond said on Wednesday.

South Korea's Incheon International Airport won the Best Airports Worldwide category for the fourth straight year. Twelve international airports were considered.

The ACI also ranked Suvarnabhumi as the 28th airport for service quality, climbing from the 41st spot in 2007. The ACI conducted a survey on service quality of 108 international airports, involving over 200,000 passengers worldwide.

The top three airports for best quality service were all from Asia - South Korea's Incheon International airport, Singapore's Changi airport and Hong Kong International airport.

Mr Serirat said Suvarnabhumi aims to be in the top 10 of the best airport service quality category this year by improving the venue's atmosphere, cleanliness, facilities, services as well as passenger safety.

Bangkok's international airport can handle more than 40 million passengers annually
