JBC Meeting in Indonesia Ended Smoothly
Tan Network 2011-04-11

The Prime Minister said that the two-day JBC meeting in Indonesia ended smoothly.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said that the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission or JBC meeting in Indonesia ended smoothly.

The premier said that Thailand proved to the international community that the Thai-Cambodian border dispute can be resolved.

He said Thailand does not want third parties to send in observers to the disputed area as over the past 2 months, during which there has been no intervention, have been peaceful.

He confirmed that the Thai Foreign Ministry and the Army have the same objective and that the JBC meeting can be held at both Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, as well as in Bangkok.

Regarding Cambodia, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hor Namhong's statement accusing Thailand of not cooperating with the plan to send in Indonesian observers to the disputed area, the premier clarified that there needs to be a clear rule as to where the observers would set up their base.

He said if the Indonesian observers set up their base within the 4.6 square kilometers area, it would be unfair as the area belongs to Thailand.

The premier added that it is normal that at meetings they can not meet every side's demands.

He said both Thailand and Cambodia still have different opinions about sending in a third party to observe the disputed border region.

The premier said he believes the conflict can be solved bilaterally.
