Police to launch traffic ticket machines

The official use of online traffic ticket machines will be announced on Monday, police spokesman Maj-General Prawut Thawornsiri said yesterday.

The machines have been set up in collaboration with the Office of Information Technology and Communication, traffic police and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Initially 100 of these machines were used in areas that have bad traffic jams and lots of traffic violations.

Prawut said these devices can check licence numbers, access records of previous violations and print tickets for motorists to pay their fines at police stations. Police are also planning to open more channels for motorists to pay their fines, such as 7-Eleven convenience stores and post offices.

The use of these machines can help cut down on motorists paying bribes, and also help the police trace stolen vehicles and catch criminals.

Technology means faster traffic tickets

Police will officially implement the "e-ticket" system in the Metropolitan Police Area 5 and Pathum Thani from December 7 onwards.

Linked to the Police and Land Transport Department databases, the new system would take one minute to issue a traffic ticket - to which an offender could pay a fine at all Thai post offices or police stations - and take only 30 seconds to check arrest warrants and stolen cars, said Pol Maj-General Somdej Khaokham, who heads the Information Technology taskforce.

The Metropolitan Police Area 5 and Thai Traffic Police will be equipped with 20 e-ticket machines while Pathum Thani police will be equipped with 10 machines, he said. All Bangkok precincts would be equipped within a year. After thirty days in service, the system would be assessed and evaluated for further improvement.
