Airport plans capacity boost

Suvarnabhumi airport is planning to add a new concourse building and expand its passenger terminal as part of a campaign to make the airport one of the 10 best in the world, the Airports of Thailand Plc president says.

Serirat Prasutanond said on the airport's fourth anniversary on Tuesday the new concourse building and expanded terminal would help boost the airport's capacity to 60 million passengers a year from its present 45 million. The expansion is expected to cost some 62.5 billion baht and be completed by 2016.

Suvarnabhumi was ranked the 24th best airport in the world last year by Airports Council International, the association of the world's airports.

More immigration check-in counters would be added by next July at a cost of 148 million baht and the air-conditioning system upgraded early next year for 900 million baht.

Screening stations would be installed in front of boarding gates so passengers who carry liquid products exceeding legal limits can check them in rather than discard them. Mr Serirat said the service was standard at most international airports.

The airport has brought in a centralised screening system to improve security and has also introduced lighter baggage trolleys, the airport director, Niran Teeranartsin, said.

The airport would also install self-service kiosks to dispense boarding passes.
