Six city areas set standard for creativityChatuchak market, Thong Lor, Siam Square, Town in Town, Royal City Avenue and Sukhumvit have been identified as having the most potential to promote Bangkok as a creative city.
A research group from the architecture and planning faculty at Thammasat University identified the six areas at a "Bangkok Creative City" seminar organised yesterday by Thailand Creative & Design Centre, the PM's Office, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
Peeradorn Kaewlai, a team member, said the research was aimed at examining the potential of Bangkok as a creative city for arts and design like Berlin and for creative industry like Seoul.
The researchers in their study looked at the kind of people living and working in these areas, the social activities available and the types of creative businesses.
They found Chatuchak market was a source of products created by small and medium-sized makers and dealers of such products. The well-known weekend market draws more than 200,000 customers a week.
Thong Lor is where many wedding studios and related businesses are located. They effectively pool resources to reduce costs and the business in the area is estimated to generate 10 billion baht in revenues a year.
Siam Square is a centre for clothing shops belonging to new designers, Town in Town is a housing estate for offices in the home that brought together many advertising and film operators, Royal City Avenue is a centre for music, media and entertainment businesses, and Sukhumvit Road between Nana Road and Ekamai Road is where tourists and expatriates stay for a very wide range of accommodation and facilities.
