No, not me. Wife told me a few weeks ago that having no driving license when you are in a police check now costs ฿10 000.-
I scoffed.
Lady just called to say that just that has happened to her, she had to go to the police station in Buriram, show her license and pay up. Motorbikes ฿5000.-
Anybody else got info on this? I'm still a bit doubtful. How does this work, if you don't have a license at all, what happens? Same as before, pay ฿300.- and continue driving? Or is it the same as for people that 'forget' to renew their license and have to do 8 hours of classes and take the test again, answers 95% correct?
Seems a bit drastic for many Thais even though I do get indignant that people without a license can drive and still get their accident costs covered by their insurance and so on.
The SIL doesn't think this is funny as his three sons don't have a license (five accidents between them in the last four years with yours truly serving as emergency 2 am ambulance driver). I can see him talking to his wife about this now.
I thought there were fewer cars than usual this morning....
Maybe they will start with safety helmets next.
