Timber furniture

I'm wanting to buy some nice timber furniture for my new house. Particularly a bedroom vanity dresser with mirror, and a long bench seat, and a dining table/chairs.

I've looked at just about every road side vendor, markets, etc etc and have seen some truly beautiful stuff. But I'm curious to know what sort of timber most of this furniture is made from ?

Also, it looks to be hand made, but I see the same pieces in many various and widespread selling locations. Is this stuff churned out in a factory, or is it truly hand made piece by piece.

Can anyone help with some info. Perhaps recommendations for where you have got a good deal, things to be wary of etc

Hand made locally and sold at the Chong Chom Market. If you have the time I recommend the wood shops on Highway 11 Den Chai northern Thailand.

A lot of the wood is smuggled across from Cambodia and Burma. Any Border market will sell it and I have seen the best deals across from Hau Hin at the Burma border market. Very Beautiful pieces.

I bought a large wine rack from there last month....... just need to save up for the wine to put in it.

There is a guy inside Banmai village who makes good furniture & its not expensive either

Thanks for your replies and info guys. Much appreciated. I didn't really want to go travelling too far out of Buriram city, as the furniture is awkward and heavy to move and deliver over any great distance.

Finished up getting some nice pieces from a big open shed vendor near Buriram Hino dealer on Buriram - Nang Rong Rd. (near the 2nd U Turn coming out of Big C)  The place always has 3 or 4 salas out front on the roadside.

Lady was friendly and attentive, without following me around the half dozen times I've visited. That was nice to be able to browse at leisure. Every piece of furniture has a price sticker on it. Can't understand why sellers don't openly display prices ? I suppose they can size up the potential depth of the customers pocket when he walks in the door ?

At least if there is a price sticker, you know the starting price.

Obviously, I thought their prices were very reasonable, and negotiated a fair price with my TGF doing the bargaining. Even managed to haggle a further discount when I turned up today and produced a bundle of baht. Delivery was free, and only took 1hr.

So ... a happy ending. Once again, thanks for your input guys. It was a pretty big investment in some really nice furniture.

Just to finish ... if you want to see a truly bizarre vanity dressing table piece, drop into this vendor. I've never seen anything so large or grandiose. Your bedroom would need to be huge, and the piece would need to be disasembled to get  it inside your house. 30,000 baht !!

Having said that ... I want it !!  haha   Not
