Suvarnabhumi named fifth best airport

Suvarnabhumi Airport has been ranked fifth best in its category of annual capacity of more than 40 million passengers.

In the 2010 list, there were 13 airports rated in the category by Airports Council International (ACI). The top four are in Hong Kong, Beijing, Dubai and Dallas.

According to Airports of Thailand, which operates the Bangkok airport, in 2009, Suvarnabhumi was ranked sixth in the category of airports with capacity of 25 million to 40 million passengers.

In 2010, with the number of passengers reaching 42.7 million, it was moved up to the category of more than 40 million passengers.

The ACI 2010 ranking covered 154 airports across the world. The ranking was based on a satisfaction survey of 260,000 passengers at those airports.

Suvarnabhumi Airport official Wilaiwan Nadwilai said: "AOT is committed to making Suvarnabhumi a top10 airport worldwide."

The top three airports are now Incheon in South Korea, Changi in Singapore and Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong.

Immigration delays hurt Suvarnabhumi

Immigration delays hurt airport's popularity in survey

Suvarnabhumi airport has dropped in popularity among travellers, according to a survey conducted by the Airports Council International.

In the ACI survey, Suvarnabhumi airport falls from 24th place in 2009 to 45th last year in the customer satisfaction category.

The steep plunge was blamed mainly on the long queues at immigration clearance, said a source at the Airports of Thailand Plc. The source said the drop in rating was also partly due to the survey becoming more competitive, with a total of 154 airports now participating in the survey, up from 143 in 2009. However, Suvarnabhumi slid only slightly in travellers' evaluations of service quality.

The source said airport cleanliness and immigration clearance efficiency play a big part in satisfaction ratings.

Suvarnabhumi did not do well in the area of immigration checks with many complaints of long queues. The wait was so long sometimes that people almost missed their flights.

Overall, however, Suvarnabhumi was last year ranked fifth among airports worldwide with annual passenger arrivals exceeding 40 million. Thirteen airports of this size entered the survey with Hong Kong international airport taking first place.
