Drought crisis in Buri Ram province is expanding. 56,700 households have inadequate water for consumption. Local authorities speedily distribute fresh water to ease the crisis while water in 23 dikes and reservoirs are still sufficient to produce tap water.
According to the latest survey conducted in 1,029 villages in 84 sub-districts, 250,700 people in 56,700 households have been affected by the water shortage crisis. The most severely affected areas are Lam Plai Mat, Nong Hong and Khaen Dong Districts respectively.
Water for consumption remains scarce although local authorities have been handing out help by distributing water to villagers since natural water sources in many areas have started to dry out rapidly.
Buri Ram Disaster Prevention and Mitigation officer Pornchet Saengthong said that water volume in 23 dikes and reservoirs is about 70 percent of their capacity and is expected to be sufficient to supply water for people in the service area near the reservoirs.
