Alcohol excise taxes raised
September 3, 2013 6:55 pm
Effective on September 4, the excise taxes on liquor, beer and wine will go up by 7- 15 per cent.
Somchai Poolsawasdi, director-general of the Excise Department, said that the increases will go into effect immediately to prevent traders from hoarding products to cash in on the higher rates.
The rise in the price of beer is expected to be only Bt2-Bt3 per can, but will be higher for liquor, especially imported whisky.

Just bought 5 boxes Large Leo 500 baht/box in Nong Ki!

I thank that price is on the old stock. Wait tell they gelt the new stock.

Doesn't matter if it is old stock, all stores need to up their prices today as in order to re-stock they have to pay that higher price.
I went to a local store here and bought 6 cases at 505 baht. An hour later the guy came saying he made a mistake and the price should have been 545 baht. And while I could have argued with him that the deal was already closed, I let him take the beer back.
These village stores have very little profit. There seems to be a village store every 20 meters or so. A lot of competion, small profit, sometimes measured in 10th of a baht.
I am kind of glad the guy came and I was starting to feel guilty for taking advantage of his ignorance for a lousy 150 baht or so.
BTW, my TW called the Buriram Makro, they said that are still selling Leo at 495 baht. However, they are out of stock at the moment.

True this is to be instantaneous on all stock. The bamboo telegraph was slow as usual.

Bollocks.
The vendors 'normal margin' will be achieved by selling old stock at old prices. New stock at new prices will be sold at the appropriate margin.
Selling old stock at the higher price simply gives a windfall profit.
I would have thought Americans would have known that !! swordfight

For example, we sell some candy that I buy 100 at 77 baht, and sell each piece for 1 baht, or my price is .77 baht a piece and my profit is .23 baht. Only takes me month to sell the 100 for my 23 baht windfall.

Co Co you are all wet on this one.
The Thai already has made his investment to buy the case, and has a 10 baht a case profit. His new cost is 530 baht, where does this new 20 baht come from? He has to make another investment from his profit.
Or he can immediately up the price and not have take from his profit.
But then that is why we Americans are superior in business to the rest of you. buttslap

If you are so fcuking good at business, why are there so many of you in Thailand ?

Coco, maybe what he said was a joke.Seeing the yanks are effectively bankrupt, and just keep raising their debt ceiling so they can print money....now THAT'S poor business management!

Enjoying the fruits of our labors after we sold off everything in the US. But we do get bored, so in my case I started a side internet business where my involvement is oversight. We can jump in the car and head off on vacation and the business will run itself for weeks.
Life is good when you let it be. party5 party8

No that is GVT in action.

Just got back from Buriram Makro. If you go to the registration counter and they have Leo cases, you can get two (provide Makro card to people and get ticket).
Got 2 cases for 495 each. You are allowed 2 a day.
-
@495 Baht a case I would be looking very hard at the bottled on date.
Thai beer doesn't keep that well.
Macro is notorious for putting new pallets of beer in front of old stock.
This has nothing to do with the recent price rise ... they just don't have a clue.
NO idea of stock rotation.

And expiration date of 310813 (what I got today) is fresh enough for me.
I agree in general, 2 weeks ago they had Leo with expiration of 200513, I didn't buy.
-
Got 2 more cases from Makro today since I was at Big C anyway, 495 each. (BTW, Big has about 1/2 its liquor stock gone, and 70% of its beer, bottles on shelf are very dusty as if have been around on the top shelf awhile)
One case 310813, the 2nd case was half again as old, but within my tolerances.
It was about 1 pm, 10 minutes later as we went to the checkout line all the beer was gone. Not sure if they ran out or are just doing their usual slow stockage.
Upped my sales price to 55bt bottle, 35bt can (from 50/30) yesterday, no slowdown in sales, almost out of cans. Amazing as we just try to have beer available for our internet customers, but Thai's keep coming just for the beer. And the store 20 meters up the road still has not raised their prices.
But then my beer is significantly colder as the prime user (me) likes his beer American Style, Ice Cold. tonguebar2

I tried to explain the sale by date the other day and was assured this is not the sale by date but the manufacture date............. Their firkin priceless aint they....... ! redman

Yesterday @ 10.30 am that pallet was 3/4 full. I picked up a couple of boxes, went and did the rest of the shopping, thought I would grab another case while the going was good only to find said pallet now very close to empty :o
