Title: Mekong River Hotel Suggestions..
Post by: Somnat on October 29, 2012, 07:58:59 PM
Have some friends coming to visit next year around Songkran time.

We have that sorted out as well as side trips to Bangkok / Hua Hin / Kanchanaburi.

They (and me) would also like to spend a few days R and R somewhere on the Mekong River.

As in, a hotel that fronts the river. Views of the river from rooms etc.

The Thailand side, and closer to Buriram the better. (time restraints etc etc etc)

I know Google is my friend, but personal recommendations are sometimes a lot better.

Hi Somnat

You are probably looking at heading towards Ubon, Nakhon Phanom or Nong Ki if you want to remain in Thailand.

I am sure we have members with personal experiences of these areas. I stayed in a hotel on the Mekong at Nakhon Phanom - bugger all to do ! Nong Ki was more attractive but is quite a journey (the Burma, Laos, Thai triangle up towards Chiang Rai is even further).

Unless you have reason not to cross the Thai border, at least consider Laos - Pakse is a nice spot only half an hour or so over the border.

Not Mekong related but Siem Reap/Angkor Wat is a wonderful location for visitors to this area.

Thanks Co-Co.

Nakhon Phanom was one place I was looking at.

Conflicting reports on Trip Advisor on some of the places listed.

Not over concerned about lack of activities due to a full on couple of weeks leading up to and after that part of their trip.

What was the Hotel you stayed at like?

Both Pakse and Siem Reap/Angkor Wat are on the agenda for their next trip later in the year.

I've stayed in both the hotels in Nakhon Panom that overlook the Mekong ,the newer one is by far the best.

I stayed at the River View hotel about 4 years ago. Quite impressed with it.

That's the one with a heap of conflicting reports on Trip Adviser, and the same one I was looking at going to.

I am sure nookiebear will get back with the name of the newer one he stayed at :)

You maybe in for a long wait!

Anyway my input ~~~~~~~ Been to Nong Khai a couple of times Jan/Feb time and frankly the Mekong was a big disappointment .  A muddy stream a couple of hundred meters away in the middle of the river.

Bearing in mind Songkran is end of dry season water might be in short supply!

Good point TBWG. And certainly something to consider.

Will be off to OZ next week for amongst other things, a confab with my visitors.

Might even suggest the Siam rep trip instead :)

Siem Reap and Angkor Wat are fantastic all year round.  I am sure your visitors, Somnat, would not be disappointed, nor anyone else who has never been. The Tonle Sap ,the largest freshwater lake in Asia beats the mighty Mekong hands down!

Our latest tour last week involving some  7 first time visitors  was ecstatically received with all vowing to return again. Their only disappointment was that 3 days was far too short.

One of my favorites is the Tohsang Khongjiam Resort in Ubon. Nice balcony room with view over the Mekhong, delicious food on the terrace also near the Mekhong, nice pool....

Thanks PCN Nobby and Bartomeer .... Food for thought, all of it.

PCN, are you aware of a Siem Reap trip around May next year?

We  don't normally plan trips that far ahead, but we have visited Siem Reap every month so far this year and it is highly  likely there will be a trip in May. If we have 3/4 or more people wanting to go at a specific time we try and mould a tour around them.  We can arrange private tours for any number of people, but less than 6 works out more expensive, as transport costs are the same.

Be happy to see you and your friends Somnat.

Aussie friends will be here for the whole month (May) so I am sure if a trip is going (and they want to go) they will be on it + Me Wife and Daughter.

I will know next week when I see them and let you know when I get back from OZ.
