Title: Mail service from the states?
Post by: RonTexas on June 02, 2012, 09:59:07 AM
Good morning friends.  Being a very green newbie here, I just realized I have not idea how the postal system works. How long does it take to send and receive mail from the states? Is online shopping like at Amazon.com feasible here? First things first. I need to figure out what my address is. Where in the world am I?

It takes me between a week or 2 to get mail from the states depending on whether you are using priority mail or not.

You would use your street address, and the city/village you reside.

and the zip for Buriram is 31000

There can be some confusion if you actually are in Buriram city as the city name and province name are the same.

The city name is Muang. Buriram is the province.

Shopping from here via the intenet you are most likely to be charged IMPORT duty which can amount to more than the cost of the items brought.

The city name is Muang. Buriram is the province.

Muang MEANS CITY and is NOT the city name. If you live in Buriram city, you live in Muang Buriram,Buriram Province. If you live in Surin, you live in Muang Surin,Surin Province.

Grung, often spelt Krung, means city.

When addressing a letter one does not write Muang Buriram, Buriram Province. Same as one does not write Sangka Surin, Surin province.

The address would show Ampher Muang, meaning Muang District.

The true meaning of Muang is town. So to live in Muang District means that you are living the main town of a Province.

Buriram is not a city. If it was a city it would have areas called Khet and not Tambon or Ampher.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Your statement "The city name is Muang" confused me, maybe I need to imbibe a few more beers. Have we ever met, your posts seem stangely farmiliar?

Yes indeed. Sorry for the misuse of the word City in my original post. I was falling into the Americanisation trap.

How would I know if we have met when I do not know who you are???

I would imagine the answer is no as I tend to keep to myself. Rather sit and have a few beers in the village than in a "farang" establishment.

The official address of the Siam Commercial Bank is:

The Siam Commercial Company Limitied
Buriram Branch
28/30 Thanee Rd.  TB.Naimuang
AP.Muang Buriram 31000  Thailand

Take it from there on how it fits.

Cheers

Ron I just sent a box to "KRUNG Thep" (Bangkok)  nowinkbar

It was a box sent from Alaska 'express mail' and it took about 5 days. Cost $50 to send but it was faster than I expected. To Mueang Buriram I would say add an extra 2-3 days.

Thank you for the clarification Urleft. Sadly the Thai language does not use punctuation as the English language does. But as you can see Buriram is only quoted once.

The last lines of the address, if punctuated correctly, would read:

AP. Muang, Buriram, 31000, Thailand.
