so all the more reason to brew your own. I am making 20 liters a month now, and am aiming for 100 liters as soon as I get the temperature problem sorted. Illegal? yes, I might get a 200 Baht fine, meaning that I may have to pay the boys in blue for the favour of letting them 'confiscate' my beer.

Why not just invite them round for a beer tasting session? yeahme party15 party4 wackobar tonguebar2

ok, when I feel confident about the quality we'll organise a tasting (results variable at the moment due to high temperatures, will buy a freezer and get the temps down to 20 - 23 C.). Aiming for a lager at the moment, better than Chang, still too expensive brewing small quantities.

Good luck with your venture. For what its worth, I think its a very good idea (for small acorns.. and all that).
Just off for a pint of Harvey new Georgian Dragon ale

Section 5 of the Liquors Act (1950) states that it is illegal for anyone to brew their own alcohol, or even have the equipment to do so.
The maximum penalty for contravention of this section of the Act is six months in jail, or a fine of 5,000 baht, or both.
If the offender sells the liquour, the maximum penalty rises to a year in jail or a 10,000 baht fine, or both.
Those are the maximum penalties and can be imposed for making and / or selling distilled alcohol (spirits).
The maximum penalties for brewing or fermenting alcohol - wine or beer, for example - are lower: 200 baht for making it and 5,000 baht for selling it.'

If he got 30 000 Baht fine he must have been very naughty, possibly sending people blind or not inviting the local police for a sampling. I can only explain the relatively high prices for beer in Thailand to some kind of 'Monopoly' (or maybe another word beginning with 'M') not welcoming competition. I believe the big breweries are in the hands of the Chinese-Thais.

I believe it was a case of pay 30,000 baht or have your visa cancelled........An expensive pint !
-
If they De-value the baht things will really go up! I was talking to the wife about the 300bt per day and she was happy to see it saying how great it was. I explained to her that if the 300bt pd rise cost her 50bt per day in extra expense she would be losing money in the end.
Going from say 250bt pd to 300bt pd = 50bt x 6 days x 4.5 weeks = 1350bt
50bt x 30 = 1500bt per month
At the very best people are breaking even. But the Thai / Asian concept of its all about the payoff baffles me. My mother in law spent 30,000 baht farming rice last year. When it was all said and done she walked away with 40,000 baht and rice for the year. She would have made more money working at 7-11 and buying rice to eat for 6 months.

...and they're off with one baht per litre increase on petrol and diesel today. How much tomorrow ? Maybe we'll see the 45 baht a litre for diesel again.....

An astute observation on your behalf ,however may I draw it to your attention that the whole Country,s Commerce is in the hands of the Chinese Thai's , this simple fact may stick in the throats of a few who live in some sort of Issan dream world ,IMHO however distressful or distasteful personally to me its the simple truth ,at this moment in time with out the Thai Chinese business acumen (even with its acute corruption) this Country would sink beneath the financial waves in a very short space of time smilenod

.. I thought that I had about gone as far as I could without actually going down that slippery slope. I think that there are far more people living in a dreamworld Pattaya and company than there are in Isaan. Nice to be called astute for once, thanks.

[/quote Hi Davu ,thanks for the reply ,by "Issan dreamers" I was referring to the local populace not the farangs who live here ,although I have to admit it did appear that way ,why my statement?, well IMHO they have been well and truly led down the "garden path" with the broken promises by this present administration, the main one in my area is of course the price of rice promised per tonne ,here the average price for hom mali rice is between 14,000 and 16,000 tops a tonne , some way off the 20,000 mentioned in the Election manifesto and there are others too that have fell by the wayside which leads me to believe that these people have been well and truly "shafted" such a shame that they built their hopes and voted on empty promises .

My wife and i sold rice from last year crop as directed by the government and received 19 baht a kilo for the 32,000 kilos we sold,we had to wait a little time for the money but it did come in the end.
Just under what was promised, but we were still very happy with that price.
-
I suppose its OK if you can afford to wait ,but as you may be well aware many poor farmers do not have any "fall back money" and therefore need to sell theirs quickly mores the pity , but

The wait for the wife was 7 days. She received 17 baht. This was Kap Choeng. The check had to be deposited in the Farmers bank same bank that most had taken out a loan from and had defaulted guess who got the money not the farmer. So those that got wise had to settle for the open price of 15 baht per kilo.
-
You have to 'feel' for the real Thai farmers as they get 'screwed' by the Thai-Chinese at every opportunity

Quite true Nookie I could not agree more , unfortunately the Thai Chinese Run nearly all the commerce and All things political, the normal Issan Thai is just grist to their mill.

I agree it's sad to see the poor always losing out to the rich, but it's better than the rich giving everything to the poor, what sort of society would that be.
I am afraid it's a dog eat dog world and only the strong and the rich survive,if someone offers you something take it and ask no question, ask to many questions and people wont offer it again.
-
Quite correct TAL (hope you do not mind) its a dog eat dog world as you rightly say, whats the answer?, maybe here in Thailand is to stamp down on the blatant corruption were those who are "connected" or are in "positions of power" appear totally immune from being punished or held accountable for their misdeeds ,a prime example is Thaksin's W.O.D in 03 and to a lesser degree more cases than I care to mention (on both sides of the political spectrum) as Farangs we have no influence on how this Country is run, however that does not mean we cannot comment ,as I am sure you will agree us farangs add quite a lot to this Countrys economy whilst taking nothing from it party4
-
FWIW. My take on the 20 baht scheme for rice. The government probay worded it incorrectly but they did not promise a complet 20 baht per kilo. They should of said UP to 20 baht as the price was still paid on the quality as 2 post have outlined.
-
Maybe it was worded incorrectly who knows, never the less the Issan Electorate voted on the assumption that this was an across the board price or IMHO they were deceived ,just the same as the across board 300 baht a day wage increase, which was shall we say was "reviewed " owing to "outside" business pressure ,and With respect I hardly think that the normal Issan Thai is used to reading the "fine print" but takes everything at face value ,and there in lies the real crux of the matter, we have often heard the old political cliche "my words were taken out of context", it would seem to me that is what applies here all to well  .
-

You are quite right to assume that i would agree with you, indeed we as farang contribute a vast amount of revenue into this country,it may well be spent on anything from education of our children to intoxication of ones self, but as in both cases it's money well spent, would you not agree.
-
Yeah TAL I suppose that goes for every one here in Buriram ,we all make our little contributions to the well being of the province ,with many changing the lives of our partners for the better to a standard they could only dream of before, of course mistakes are made as we read all too often ,but that scenario is not unique to Thailand is it! smilenod , all in all I'm well satisfied with my life here in my little village ,of course their is room for improvement ,but that could be said all over the world , especially now when it would appear its got its head up its financial nether regions with no light showing at the end of the tunnel at this moment in time .
