Title: Number plates
Post by: chokchai on March 07, 2012, 12:21:40 PM
I have just ordered a new pick-up( Due next week....not holding my breath though!!!)

Have been told that the vehicle will have a red number plate to start with and with this comes some strange restrictions.

Can anyone enlighten this ignorant old expat?

Red plates = not driving after sundown and not leaving your town. If you do have to you should go to the police station and apply for a permitbook in which you have to note down your trip(s) ... this is how it should be done but hardly anybody does it.
As long as you do not encounter any difficulties like an accident nobody will say anything, the problem might arise with your insurance if you haven't followed the rules and got into an accident.
The wise way is wait for your regular licenceplates and just stay in and around the village.
Although your thai family might want you to drive them around so they can show of their red tags ...

I believe that the dealer supplies the book in which you record the journeys 'out of province'. They keep the book once you have the 'real' plates.

Mine took three months, and the Toyota dealership in Chonburi told us that the plates they had put on the car where fakes and we should expect to be fined if the police stopped us and noticed.
