Mate,

I fly from Melbourne too. I usually book my flights on Friday using Jetstar Friday Frenzy. I flew on 19-May-11 and paid $500 including taxes and in-flight entertainment. I prefer Jetsrat as there are various options including flying direct or via Singapore (with multiple transit times varying from 2 hours to 10 hours) .

I use Starbus from home to airport which picks me up from in front of my house in North Melbourne and returns same way too. It costs me $25 for return trip.

I use cab from BKK airport to Morchit costing around 300 baht and catch Gold Class bus at 22:20 to Prakhonchai costing around 265 baht. The advantage of Gold Class is extra wide seats and bigger toilets.

If you want to stay overnight, then there is a hotel called Thong Tha resort which is near airport and a room will cost you from 500 - 700 baht (look at agoda.com). This cost includes breakfast and pickup from aiport. They also have free wifi and good eating places walking distance from hotel.

I hope this helps.
