Airport to Get Automatic Passport Check System

Suvarnabhumi Airport has invested more than 76 million baht on an automatic passport inspection system to address the problem of overcrowding at the immigration checkpoints.
Deputy director of the Suvarnabhumi Airport, Wilaiwan Nadwilai, reported that to address the problem of overcrowding and lines at immigration checkpoints, more than 76 million baht have been invested for the installation of an automatic passport inspection system.
Eight machines will be installed at the arrival section and another eight at the departure section.
Passengers will be able to check themselves in and out without the need for immigration officials.
This will reduce the immigration processing time from 45 seconds per person to 25 seconds.
The airport expects the system to go online at the end of the year.
Wilaiwan also said that the airport authority is currently drawing up the terms of reference for the bidding process for the installation of an air conditioning system.
She believes that the winning contractor will be able to start the installation later this year.

I believe that will be the time spent standing in front of the immigration officer - in which case it is understated by half. Unless they start talking to their colleague then it is understated by a factor of 4.

The USA has an automated Passport system, but you have to apply and pay $100, and get interviewed.
I got approved for it in 2009, It is really nice. I arrived in Boston from London on one trip, took me 4 minutes 32 seconds from exiting the plane to get through immigration and customs, then reach the terminal. In April, it took me 8 minutes 45 seconds to do the same at LAX, and this was with customs lines about 50 meters long.
So if a system at BKK speeds things like the US system, I will be a fan of it.

Basically Yes, I got off JL 707, was bussed to terminal right next to immigration. As I entered the terminal I was met by a hostess and guy to carry my bags (only had carry on). Went to Fast Track immigration (no line) checked right through, then right past customs (no baggage check) to the terminal to my waiting taxi, took less than 5 minutes from getting off the bus to being handed over to my driver.

I agree that an averrage Joe would not get this.
But since I am an American, everyone takes care of me.

Landed on 19-May-11 with JQ029 at 20:40, walked like a rocket the immigration, first one in the line and got cleared in less than a minute with a comment from the officer about me going to Prakhonchai as he was from Baan Sai.
But, then had to wait for wife to come out as she walked in her leisurely stroll mode from plane to get to immigration line in 15 mins and got cleared in 2-3 mins.
