Title: Fear of nuclear meltdown in Japan
Post by: nico on March 12, 2011, 06:59:01 PM
There has been an explosion in one of the powerplants in fukushima Japan. Hope for the best but it looks like there will be radiation leaks from this event. It depends about the winds now where it shall spread.

Its 100 times more powerful than Chernobyl, but a different type of station completely and much more safe (I am told!)

There are several reactors in Fukushima daiichin area and nuber 1 had the problems now. None of them are 100 times more powerfull than tshernobyl... do your math Dave

Unit   Type   First criticality   Electric power
Fukushima I – 1   BWR   October 1970[1]   460 MW
Fukushima I – 2   BWR   July 18, 1974   784 MW
Fukushima I – 3   BWR   March 27, 1976   784 MW
Fukushima I – 4   BWR   October 12, 1978   784 MW
Fukushima I – 5   BWR   April 18, 1978   784 MW
Fukushima I – 6   BWR   October 24, 1979   1,100 MW

Now they are using seawater for cooling the unit, and seems like they can prevent the coremeltdown.

Meltdown Likely Under Way At Japan Nuclear Reactor
Source: AP 2011-03-13

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's top government spokesman says a partial meltdown is likely under way at second reactor affected by Friday's massive earthquake.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Sunday that radiation at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima briefly rose above legal limits, but it has since declined significantly.

Three reactors at the plant lost their cooling functions in the aftermath of quake and tsunami because of a power outage.

Some 170,000 people have been ordered to evacuate the area within 12 miles (20 kilometers) of the plant.

The plant is 170 miles (270 kilometers) north of Tokyo.

Pray, just pray.  There's nothing else we or the Japanese can do now.

The large explosion in reactor unit 3 at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant (Japan), following offshore earthquakes in the region.
This is the second explosion recorded at the power plant in days.

Reports of 'hundreds of bodies' keep coming in.  I guess the eventual death toll will exceed 20,000.

An interesting side note reflective of the Japanese culture amongst this great tragedy. The looting is nil....as one would expect nearly everywhere in such a catastrophe. Expect the ever-tough and organized Japanese to be up on their feet before long. Think about the massive problems that they are dealing with....

Now graded as Level 6!!!
7 – Major Accident
6 – Serious Accident
5 – Accident With Wider Consequences
4 – Accident With Local Consequences
3 – Serious Incident
2 – Incident
1 – Anomaly
0 – Deviation (No Safety Significance)

I would say it was level 7

Japan Crisis Level just up graded to Level 6

Level 7: Major accidentImpact on People and Environment
Major release of radioactive material with widespread health and environmental effects requiring implementation of planned and extended countermeasures
Chernobyl disaster, 26 April 1986. A power surge during a test procedure resulted in a criticality accident, leading to a powerful steam explosion and fire that released a significant fraction of core material into the environment, resulting in a death toll of 56 as well as estimated 4,000 additional cancer fatalities among people exposed to elevated doses of radiation. As a result, the city of Chernobyl (pop. 14,000) was largely abandoned, and the larger city of Prypiat (pop. 49,400) was completely abandoned. The disaster also brought about the creation of the so-called Zone of Alienation. The Chernobyl disaster is the only Level 7 Event that has ever occurred.

Level 6: Serious accidentImpact on People and Environment
Significant release of radioactive material likely to require implementation of planned countermeasures.
Example

Kyshtym disaster at Mayak, Soviet Union, 29 September 1957. A failed cooling system at a military nuclear waste reprocessing facility caused a steam explosion that released 70–80 tons of highly radioactive material into the environment. Impact on local population is not fully known.[2]

I think we should all be worried

I guess you could change the name of this topic: Multiple nuclear meltdowns in Japan... never believed it would get this big, like people there had not enough problems allready.

I read somewhere the radiation will go as far as to North America and to some parts of Europe.
Considering Thailand is geographically much closer, Do we have to worry about radiation coming from Japan? ???
The weather got crazy lately also, global warming or effect of the Japanese disaster?

This might answer the question......

Colder weather in Thailand is caused by global warming
The Nation 2011-03-17

Weather Department on Thursday said that the global warming is the major cause of dropping of temperature in Thailand.

Department's Deputy Director General Somchai Baimuang said that the cold weather is likely to continue until tomorrow.

Temperature on Thursday has dropped across the country, with that in Bangkok dropped to 19 Celcius and that in northern province of Loei went down to 6.12 Celcius.

I think spreading of contamination to North Amerika is because of jet streams over Japan.

I think (and hope) this Japan situation wont have effects in Thailand. I understand that in rainy season winds are blowing from south west (from India direction) to Thailand.
Picture of jet stream over Japan.
