Hi, Adam, Tommynew, and Nookie... and any other cricket fans. Since our normal channel of communication about the failings of the Aussies is temporarily suspended, I thought I'd better follow Adam's suggestion and start a cricket channel here. Who knows, maybe it'll stay here, Admin.!
I came home from my morning walk today intentionally early, as I didn't want to miss all the cricket. One wicket had fallen the moment I switched on, and two more went in the next three balls! I was just in time.
For the next Test (on the 16th) Katich is out already, North is certain to go, Doherty may well follow, and what about the fast bowlers? We seem to have them well and truly on the run. If only we could get rid of the man we all love to hate, Ponting!
-
Even though I am not a Cricket fan, this seems like a smart move Mike ... fastclapping fastclapping fastclapping
Come on England spot1

No Mike, we want them to KEEP Ponting..we love him love6
In fact, if I was on the Aussie selection board, I wouldn't change a thing. Keep faith in your boys..you know it makes sense thumbup
I wonder if there are any more Aussies on this site buttslap
Looking forward to the next one..
Adam

Ponting makes a good punching-bag.....
Keep them or change them, what's the difference? Unless they come up with a new Shane Warne, for example.
-
It was a bloody good win,,,,I thought at one time the weather would save their bacon but alas it didn't Roll on the 3rd Test
-
Talk about eating humble pie,,,,,,,,,,,What a bunch of wankers!!!
-
Great fightback by Australia, especially Johnson and Hussey (though he's been on form throughout the Tests). So to Boxing Day at the MCG.
-
Ricky's Mum and Dad live down the road from me. They play golf. So does Ricky.....he plays off scratch and could earn a motza on the golfing circuit. God knows why he sticks with Cricket!
Don't write Australia off. The teams failure in my opinion comes from the selectors NOT the Captain. Unfortunately the Skipper does not have a deciding vote on the players. Punter is working on David Boon ( current selector) to allow the Captain more leeway in selection.
Cheers,
John swordfight

Interesting post, John. Of course I want England to win... born within a mile of a county cricket ground, and watched cricket since I was 9 (my first day at a match saw India score 533-3 decl. against Sussex, all four men making tons), but what I like best is a real ding-dong battle, with good cricket on both sides. Australia seem to have been a mess since Gilchrist, Warne etc, retired, although Punter has always had the reputation of being a good captain as well as a top-class bat. I'm particularly glad to see Hussey come back to life... when he appeared on the scene in 2006 (I think) he was so good, but he's been in eclipse for the past two years.
-
Congratulations to the Okkers for fighting back, it makes the last 2 tests much more interesting. For a moment there it was looking like they were down and out, then they come back with a stunning performance, hats off to them.
Although I trap off, like Mike I am a cricket fan and the biggest story of the week was not this one, but Sachin Tendulkars 50th test century......WOW!! redman
All set for MCG.................... knuppel2 C'MON ENGLAND!!
-
Tendulkar made his 50 centuries in 175 tests; next come Ponting with 39/151, Kallis with 38/143. Compare Bradman with 29/52. It rather puts the moderns in perspective!

Yes, Grandad.
You don't get the likes of Malcolm Nash bowling to the likes of Gary Sobers any more !

Happylarry will be calling me 'greatgrandad' soon. I've watched Bradman... indeed I've seen him make a 100... and believe me, he was amazing. I've never seen anyone who could find the gaps in the field the way he could.
-
Aussies 66/4....Ponting & Huusy both out too
-
Yes, good start for England, 77-5 now. Sorry, 77-6, Clarke gone too!
-
Now 78-8
-
98 ALL OUT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Tea being taken!!!!!
6 Catches for Prior!!!
Must have been a good Toss to win
-
All out for 98!!!! A classic case of self-abuse. If England bat as badly as that, they don't deserve to win the Ashes.

I can't usually be bothered with smileys, but I thought this was a special occasion. I think all the Aussies are hoping for a freak storm. Tomorrow will be a boring runfest (we hope!).
-
A very good start.
Can't go wrong from here - can it ?.....................

Careful Ray, Isanbirder will stand no vacillating

Strauss & Cook both out early on but Trott & KP are there ,its 210-2
-
226-2 at lunch
-
Looked a bit dodgy there for a minute. Lots of swing. Now at lunch and the clouds are clearing. Looking good again.
-
Ponting arguing with the umpire after a review is turned down... not good to see. Things still going England's way
-
KP just gone LBW, Seems to be lots of movement in the wicket. Let's declare now and we could have the ashes back home in time for tea.!!!!!
-
294-5 now, not exactly as good as we hoped... but we still have a lead of almost 200; I hope Trott can go on to get his 100.
-
Collingwood next to FA again,Bell only 1,,,,,,Tea 304-5,,A lead of 206
-
Satisfactory day for England... the Aussies are nowhere! Good match for Prior so far, 6 catches and 75 n.o. A lead of 346 and three days to go if needed.
-
Well I'm surprised,,,,,,,,,,444-5 at close with Trott on 141 & Prior on 75
Can't find an Aussie anywhere!!!!!!!!!!
-
Very poor sportsmanship from the Aussies,no applause for Priors 50 from the Aussie team!!
-
465-7,,,,Bresnan out for 4

I was a young lad but I remember watching those 6 sixes on a sunday afternoon in 1968

England 513 all out,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,A bit of reverse swing too, could bwe an interesting afternoon
-
108-4... Hussey gone for a duck! Looking good......
-
I like the betting odds:- 250-1 against Australia to win, 67-1 against a draw, and 1.002-1 against an England win!
-
169-6 at close... that should be all over bar the shouting.
-
Before Lunch
-
Johnson bowled Tremlett,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
-
Drinks break, new ball on the way.....
-
Well thats it,all over..Ashes retained.......Aussies lose by the small margin of an Innings & 157 runs
-
Just tried ringing some Aussies ,,,,,,,,,,,They don't answer their phones,,,,,,,,,Poor fucking losers icon_latest
-
It's been a weird series so far: a nothing match, followed by an innings win, a thumping defeat, another innings win... we need to win the final test to win the series, even though we've already retained the Ashes. I wonder whether the Australian selectors have got the courage to experiment with the team for the final test... Ponting, Clarke, Hughes, and Smith out, Hauritz in for the unfortunate Harris... and four new faces. Hussey as captain, probably. They couldn't do worse than this lot!

Aussies are spineless!!
-
So Ponting is out of the Sydney test, "because of the deterioration of his little finger injury." No doubt this is true, but an awful lot of people won't believe it. How much better if he'd been ruled unfit for Melbourne! Not a nice way for a great player to go.
-
So it looks like the last test could be Pontings last as Captain
-
KP reckons England would NOT have refained the Ashes if he was still the Captain
-
Michael Clarke captain for final Test * the one dayers!!
-
I can't believe it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,A Paki Muslim is playing for the Aussies in Sydney
-
Good to have Khawaja in, for all sorts of reasons. But I'm afraid the selectors have rather washed their hands of the whole business... no changes except those mandated by injuries. Clarke has not shown himself a very good captain in one-dayers; this would have been an opportunity to blood Hussey or even Haddin, and I think both choices would have been popular.
We still need to beat them to win the Ashes, as opposed to just retain them.

I don't think the Aussies have a 'fighting spirit'
-
You'd think there was at least one Aussie on the forum who was interested in cricket... but one thing which has always amazed me on BF is the large number of views compared with the small number of posts. TIT, I suppose.

134-4... and rain. Nice debut for Khawaja... but England on top as usual. Don't know whether we'll have any more play today. And how are both the Nookies?
-
Aussies 280 all out... and England may well rue those runs from Johnson and Hilfenhaus.
-
England racing along 52-0 after 10 overs
-
103-2.... Strauss and Trott gone.
-
167-3 at stumps. England 'll be happy with that, though Pietersen seemed to throw his wicket away.

KP wants 'monkey fucking'!!!!

Goodbye Collingwood,,,,gone for only13!!!!! 254-5
-
Just tuned in... 353-5... Bell just got his 50.
-
378-5 at tea

"I think the Aussie selectors need to be more careful. Picking Shane Watson was very brave as his name is an anagram of 'want no Ashes.'

Extra half hour taken!
BTW, Prior has taken 22 catches so far in the series (best ever 28 by Marsh).

Thought that extra half hour was a bit optimistic. 213-7 at stumps... and it's all over bar the shouting (and will the Barmy Army shout!).

Can't find an Aussie anywhere!!

Nice to see a bit of fight from Smith and Siddle; we haven't seen too much of that in this Aussie innings. A great series for England, outplayed them in every department (including the spectators!).
-
Paul Collingwood has announced hir retiement from International Test Cricket
-
And Australia not only is in a crisis, but its cricket administration won't admit it. Ostriches, not emus!
-
What a cracker,,,,,,,England win 20-20 by one wkt off the last ball

Rubbish cricket, Nookie... or hit-and-a-giggle if you prefer. Fun, but dumbed-down cricket for the instant gratification generation. Nice to win, of course, but of no significance whatsoever in terms of the rivalry between the two sides.
That notwithstanding, it was nice to see a good debut for one Woakes, of whom I had never heard; we shall hear a lot more of him.

I had never heard of him before either .....I agree its rubbish cricket but it does pull in the crowds

Yes, it's a great way to raise money for the game... and also to ensure the players a decent income.

During my time living in the backwaters of Yorkshire (and probably the same all over England) an innings of more than 20 overs was the exception rather than the rule, mainly due to weather, availability and light, so why is it you consider it instant gratification on the international stage. If you don't like something then do the other thing or things that give you gratification

Village cricket and international cricket, although they're the same game, are two very different things. The village version, which I'm not criticising, is geared to half a day or a day at most... and it's the cradle from which international cricketers come. But it involves different levels of skill, training etc. There is often no time at all for the batsman to 'get his eye in', and the time limits mean that every ball has to be made to score runs if possible. I agree that a lot of time is wasted on defensive play (in Test matches in particular), but if the bowling is at that level, defence is a major part of a batsman's repertoire. In T20, you see good batsmen getting out to attacking strokes which are unjustified by the calibre of the bowling... and any bowler, however well he's bowling, is restricted to four overs. Towards the end of the 20 overs, you see wild hitting necessitated by the time restrictions.
In the modern world (and this goes far beyond cricket) everything is geared to what I've called instant gratification. People are simply no longer prepared to struggle to get what they want; they want it NOW, preferably without effort. This, in my opinion, is destroying the character of which we as Britons are proud. I could go on at length on this, and write it better (!), but I think that's enough for now. Tommy, I think you're the same age as I am... so your attitude rather surprises me! But perhaps I come from a more innately conservative stock.
Your last sentence... yes, indeed I do.

Well-deserved consolation win for Australia... we were lousy!

How fickle are Aussies ,,,,,,,,,FFS I hadn't hardly hearda peep from them for many weeks ,,,,I wondered why swordfight

Congratulations, Aussies, on a great ODI win... powered by a superb innings from Watson. The rest of the team missed so many stumpings, catches and run-outs that they hardly deserved to win!
