Title: Forum-Website Ideas/Suggestions.
Post by: Lourens on March 10, 2010, 08:54:42 AM
I love the Buriram Expats website! I like all the valuable information that is available. I’m keen to the idea of sharing and having good conversations. I’m fond of separate sections for different topics. I care for the chat box.

I dislike all the advertising. I hate the scroll boxes. I despise the worthless icons. I loathe the spam.

I know advertising generates income and it is a necessary evil. I’ve tried reading the scroll boxes once but found it irritatingly repetitive serving no function at all. And those icons and other worthless junk on the site make it very slow to load a page. With already slow connections in our area, it can be a painful experience wasting time while I could have had another beer. Sometimes the site loads only up to the non-functioning chat box and then stops!
I would love to explore the other parts of the website (not only the forums) but never gets the chance because of the above problems just getting to the good stuff. I have a very fast connection in my office at work but even then, attempting to read the forum is met with hung time.

I truly feel the website is due for a major overhaul. It might be a good idea to consult with others and get their feelings on the subject. There are many forums on the internet using the same engine but with speeds twice or even three times faster than Buriram Expats. Perhaps it’s just me, but what do other users think?

Please comment…

Let's talk about all these points you mentioned:

Scroll box:
Took off.

Forum Icons:
I assume you're talking about the new design/symbols for each BOARD.
I would love to hear your opinion about it and suggestments to improvements, what we are trying to do is simply to make the forum more visualised, plain text doesn't generate more readers..I'm talking about people with less/no experience in forum systems.
for all of us, forum is a comfortable easy pratform to work on but many others do not familiar with this system.
Make a suggestment about the size of the icon or anything else and we'll test it to all users satisfaction.

Spam:
The main problem of all forum operator. We have few "firewalls" blocking the spam and if they doesn't work, we do it manually asap.

Advertising:
compare to other big main forums systems, we have very few advertising ads, compare with TV or other forums, you'll find us relatively clean of ads.
Please do remember we operate the forum by ourself. self sponsored highly time consuming with all the aspects of running the website and forum at once.

Internet connection:

Mostly the website server is OK, we are aware of slow internet connection especially in the villages areas where there is a need for minimum upload data websites to surf in the website with all the functions, however sometimes there is a conflict between powerful function (higher internet speed consuming) to simple and less powerful applications allowing users with low speed connection experience all website's functions.
Finding the balance, together with good stable website's design is our main goal and challenge.
We'll not compromise on either of them and we'll keep doing our research and implements in the future.

Any comment are welcome.
We're always working to make you feel as much comfortable as can in the forum.  sawadi

Already an improvement. I think those scroll boxes was just a nuisance. I agree, not many are familiar with forums and how they work exactly. But I think it gets confusing when you have to start looking for a link among all the nice pictures. Right now, the pictures stand out and distract attention. In my opinion it is the links that should stand out while pictures are used to make the site attractive. Perhaps the pictures could move to the right side to leave the subject links more exposed. (With cookies enabled, the pictures load quick enough)

You already explained about spam and filters for it and I understand it fully. Unfortunately, we have to live with that. Luckily, spam does not slow the website down.

Advertising: I understand about the advertising and I appreciate tremendiously the effort you put into Buriram Expats. But here is what I suggest: Replace the Phanom Rung picture and BE logo with just a Buriram Expats (spelled out in ful) banner across the top. This can be narrower in hight and will eliminate the need to scroll down to see forum topics. Also, move Google adds to the right side oriented vertically. Again, this will move forum topics up on the page and easier to access.

Thanks Admin! You're doing us all a great service to administrate this website. thumbup

you'll see some changes within today.
I agree with you I carried away with the design and pictures, bringing the topics upper to the forum page and minimize scrolling is very important point.
Please comment after the changes I'll do today.

OK - I played around on it a bit now. May I make two other sugestions?

1. There is no link from the forums page to the front page where all the good things are. I would like to access things like the maps, gallery and other information by only clicking on a link.

2. (Appologies to Dave) This is the BURIRAM forum. The Surin section should not be first and should be moved down.

Once again - Thank you for all your attention and hard work.

Surin forum - right between Gay people and Family and children. (I'M KIDDING!!!) Somewhere down the list is fine as long as it's not the first. And there is no need to make it separate either. They're all part of the family.  sissies

The easiest thing in the world to do is criticize someone who is trying to change things, That said, I think you have done a great job and work incredibly hard on this forum (& I should know). I think these changes are an improvement and the increase in speed is an added bonus. IMHO the page looks far neater but slightly too orange! LOL.

One observation>> When I use the spell check, the background is black and is hard to deal with. Can this be changed to fall inline with the posting box( for instance)

If its an OLD post, of course you can't edit it now.
What you should do is simple: Reply your own ad & add the photo/s you want to place there.

See this thread also, explain how to add photo to the body of text (IE: full size):

Any chance of you introducing a low resolution, as in html, option as some of us who actualy live here and still have no land line and are using GPRS/EDGE via DTAC to get on-line.  Therefore the icons, emotions etc destroy our limited bandwidth and the pages are super slow to load?

So what do you think?

It's possible, All I will have to do is 'Hide' the smiley and set them to open in 'new window' for who want to add the smiley.

Is it really that slow? its tiny icons/small files, all together maybe 1MB.
OK, lets hear more and than I will do what you think best for you.

Have you considered allowing the shoutbox to be only available AFTER log in. I fear that it could be open to abuse from unknown/un registered people saying all sorts of
bad things? I can also see no great business advantage in allowing strangers access.

Maybe DtD would like a chat box  and forum where only he/owners  can have an opinion ....a bit like SF  smilenod

But to be honest the person who was on the chat box today would hardly use his real name so I can't see what difference it make. I can understand why DtD made this comment because if they were members on SF he could ban them ,something  he seems to enjoy doing. party8

I agree with this.

Not because of the puerile shit that gets posted by a brain-dead few, but because it wastes space in the shout box. Occasionally, there is some useful information (like the price of brussel sprouts at Staffords) and that gets over-taken by this bile.

The Chat is for dynamic/changing every now and then info/conversations.
*We have already discussed about it in the past.

More important information should be posted in the forum.

That's also the reason the Chat have less control and more freedom of speech, something that is more taken care of when posting in the FORUM itself.

OK, I will explain,

Many times its members that can't for some technical reason to logging/forgot their password or just people passing by and want to ask small question about 'where to find __' in the forum/website. while they aren't members yet..

Anyhow, I wouldn't like the shout box to be a boxing ring.. hahaha
I hope all will keep on minimum level of conversation & manners and will use this option wisely! :)

There will always be some negative posters in the Chat/Forum.

Our duty is to eliminate/edit/delete those who exploit the OPEN FREE PLATFORM we are giving to the community.

I will not block the Forum or Chat just because temporary violation of the rules/manners/local dispution between people/members.

Almog,

Whilst I think your approach is commendable, I think it is 'too soft' on the perpetrators of these comments. They only come through the shout box and I would therefore question the continuation of the shout bax.

The one on SF is ineffective, Thai Visa does not have one - neither does Korat Farang or Thai Visa News.

On here it is usually full of 'good mornings' or inane drivel (mine included!).

Scrap it.

I totally agree with Forfar etc!

As I messaged you this morning, and now see that Starman has said much the same, these anonymous shouts are bringing the forum into disrepute

Please consider banning numbers, and either allow logged in members to post (then we know who they are) or as Forfar etc suggest scrap the shout box altogether.

It is indeed largely full of drivel - good mornings, up early etc, + the rubbish posters.

If the situation remains as it is, then you will lose genuine posters, which I am sure you are happy to note have increased significantly of late

I think this subject has been discussed in the past and I explained the reasons of this feature settings.

Time extended to 15 minutes and of course(!) can't edit your message if someone replied to your message even if before the 15 minuted time expiry for the obvious reasons.

*Spell Check option is not always accurate so please review your message more carefully before posting, however I don't think it is something that should bother you so much considering the fact we have many forum members from various nationalities which are not Native English speakers.

I notice that the latest banned members posts are still coming up with his name against them, unlike the previous post here above. is that intentional or an error?

Not an error.

'Boloa' dismissed himself.
'Phi Nu' was banned.

My mistake, sorry.
is it not a good idea to do the same with banned members, I think most people would agree to this? They deserve to be 'written off'

Almog,

Speed is what matters.  You have really improved it.  Frustrating waiting for Adds to load.

Every Add needs a map option for visitors (like me).  I can find major towns (e.g. Buriram, Surin, Korat (once I learned it meant "Nakhon Ratchasima").  Was just looking at Nookies Thread, there is not a map, needs to be one.

Remember, a new Expat is lost with what you take for granted as knowing where.

Thank you for the advice.
I will add map to each Ad today.

After reading the recent post about Buriram Cinema in the Restaurant&bars section, it might be a good idea to merge these 2 forum sections. Just a suggestion????

Farang Life style - fun, entertainment and Expat life
Discuss Night Life, restaurants, bars, music, movies, concerts, expat life, fun, or just a chat about everything Buriram.

BARS AND RESTURANTS IN BURIRAM AND THE SURROUNDING AREA
Farang Life style - fun, entertainment and Expat life Discuss Night Life, restaurants, bars, music, movies, concerts, expat life, fun, or just a chat about everything Buriram.

No reply to last suggested improvement so here goes with another one.....

Many other forums have an 'ignore' function so you don't have to see posts/threads from a person that you have no interest in. Could this be an option used in BE and if so, I keep getting unwanted PM's from one member which I no longer wish to receive. Is there a way of stopping them, other than obviously not using this forum anymore?

You could add the member to your Ignore List which is contained in the Buddies / Ignore List section of your profile. This should stop any further emails / PMs from that member.

Thanks very much for your assistance but I do not have a section in my profile or account settings for Buddies/ignore list

Strange. Looks like some inconsistencies exist regarding forum permissions.
See attached image for what I see when I select Modify Profile

Maybe something the moderators could look at?

You could add the member to your Ignore List.

I'm using this option now and it's working well

I too, really hate these distracting icons, most people don't use them and they can take ages to load. Just a few simple :-) kind of stuff should be enough, and what is missing is a 'like' icon or function
