HOUSE PET

 looking for a house pet.

Knowing your humour is somewhat often a little odd I include list NOT wanted

1. Buffalo water or otherwise
2. snakes deadly or otherwise
3. Elephants. Spare room not big enough!
4. Crocodile. No swimming pool
5. Rodents of any kind. Know too many already!
6. Feathered friends
7. Lizards
8. Cockroaches

I dare say someone will find one that I have missed from the list. Let me know

This leaves cats or dogs. (not a puppy) say one year old .

Personally I'd avoid a cat for the house here unless your going to shut it in all the time (which doesn't seem right). They roam, you can't wash and shampoo them as easily as a dog, and often the street dogs chase them.
We have 2 dogs. One lives outside, the other is a house dog which we saved from the Buriram streets as a puppy. She sleeps inside at night and in/out throughout the day. Shampoo and treat for ticks/fleas weekly. A pleasure to have around, comes out in the truck with me and great company.

If you go for a dog would recommend having him/her fixed. If not boy will fight to get out when bitches are on heat and if girl will fight to get out for a shag 2nd week of season plus you'll have the street dogs sitting at your gate howling and fighting every 6 months. Plus you have a battle getting in and out of your house without them getting in.

If you like the Thai Ridgeback breed then I can put you in touch with an American Breeder. He currently has around 50 dogs various ages/colours ranging from free to 50,000 THB depending on quality. All will have been fully vaccinated health checked.
Ridge backs are very intelligent, easy to train, and make good guard dogs. When our male dog passes I will be getting one. Blue, Black and Fawn colours tend to calmer temprement. The Reds can be a bit feisty.

I assume as house pet you mean in-door pet.

There are fish.  The really respond to feeding and I believe recognize different people as my wife does most of the feeding they really get excited when she walks up to the tanks. 

To do it right takes work, changing about 10-20% of the water every 1-2 weeks.  But my whole family likes it, especially the daughter that overfed the bottom tank.

Problem you cannot  take them for a walk.! (well not far and not without them dieing!!!!!!!!
Also make rotten guard dogs!

Just a thought if your leaning towards a dog. You mentioned not a puppy, a year old.
Unless you can find a family that is getting rid of a dog previously used to being in a house then it may be hard to take on a year old and train it to be a good house pet.
Have you got kids or youngsters visiting the house.
Appreciate puppy's are hard work but much easier to get the pet that you want if familiarisation with other dogs, people, children, being shampood, groomed etc starts at a young age. If you end up with a 1yr old that's been used to outdoor living then can be hard to make the adjustments and can be stressful for the dog. Not saying it can't be done but difficult to find out here simply because Thais generally treat dogs so differently.
