Acid staining concrete floors/paths
« on: April 27, 2017, 01:11:32 PM »
Guys,
I want to have a go at acid staining my garage floor but will first do some practice/testing on some hidden areas.
Be checked out many YouTube video tutorials and the process looks pretty straight forward.
Can I get acid stain here?? Alternatively, I actually have a 25 gallon drum of acid so could just add dye but I don't know what type of dye to use??
I already have a dustbin full of baking soda to neutralise.
Has anyone tried this here?? How did it work out??
I know it needs sealing after the staining. I'm assuming the seal coat. Won't be to hard to find.
Thoughts, advice, guidance welcome.

Freddy:  Several Forum members have told me they are attending the Architect Expo next week in Bangkok. There will be brochures they can bring to my store which show products and services to stain concrete. I will have these brochures at Ruangsangthai in May 2017. Any forum members in Buriram who are ready to plan or build a home in Thailand a two day visit at over 800 booths of the Architect Expo in Bangkok will enable expats and home builders to see a wide variety of home building products that are really available in Thailand. The Architect Expo is a trade show of sorts with no sales pitch from any vendors. It is the venue where Ruangsangthai buyers select which brands and products to stock or have available for delivery to home builders in Buriram Province. The event is free. You can register on line or in person.   http://www.architectexpo.com/2017/?lang=en

That's excellent, thank you.
From what I understand there are three ways to approach this:-
1. Purchase the actual acid stain which I'm assuming would be in quite large containers possibly 5 gallon.
2. Purchase the liquid dye which is then added to a acid/water mix 1:4.
3. Purchase a powdered dye to add to the acid/water mix. Apparently these dye additives are of a particular type that will dilute in water.

From what I have read it seems that option 2 would be best as the range of colours is greater and you can add the amount you want to get the particular shade required. I'm going to attempt to get a marbled effect by using a darker 1st coat , water spray and then a lighter acid coat on top. Additionally as the acid can be purchased cheaply I'm thinking that option 2 is likely to be the most cost effective both in terms of volume and shipping.

Important not to mistake what I require with the powdered pigments that are mixed in with wet concrete before pouring/rendering.

I found a supplier of Concrete Acid stain in Bangkok. They claim to be the only importer of American made Triple A concrete acid stain in Thailand. A bit expensive but still works out a lot cheaper than other options. Will order some in the next few days and give it a go.
