Cattle feed

We decided to go in for raising cattle (so the turkey project is off the program). We have had up to 7 before, sold three, one strangled itself. So tomorrow we will go and look at a few animals and I am expecting to be shelling out around ฿100 000.-
Now the question is, where can I source cattle feed? I am thinking about sugar cane by products and cassava by products. I have been to a few places around here and they only want to sell to people that actually deliver sugar cane and cassava.
Anyone else doing this?
Seems like a good idea although it has to be a long term project, not much return before three years are up.

Value of molasses as an energy supplement

Molasses is primarily an energy supplement, but is deficient in protein. Therefore, it is generally not suitable in a long-term, low-level supplement (e.g. like a dry lick) unless used as a carrier or attractant and intake is controlled and kept to a very low level (e.g. roller drums, lick blocks). Because molasses is not a balanced feed, it is usually of little benefit when it is not fortified with urea. When its energy is balanced with key nutrients, including urea, it becomes an excellent supplement for cattle.

Molasses is about 25% water (cereal grains are about 10% water).
On a wet weight basis, molasses has about two-thirds the energy per kilogram that cereal grains have. Molasses has 8.7 megajoules of metabolizable energy (MJ ME). Different sugar-refining processes may influence quality, i.e. available energy.
Molasses is low in nitrogen and high in sulphur. Therefore, a sulphur source should NOT be included in molasses-based supplements.
Molasses has high potassium levels and low sodium levels. Generally salt is added.
Molasses is also low in phosphorus.
There appears to be much less variation within mobs in intakes of molasses-based supplements than with other energy concentrates such as straight protein meal.

Main ingredients included into molasses-based supplements

Urea

Because molasses is deficient in protein it is necessary to add a minimum of 3 kg of urea per 100 kg of molasses (for the rumen bugs to be able to efficiently utilize the molasses). Use prilled urea, not granulated urea. Prilled urea dissolves about four times as fast as granulated urea in a mechanical mixer; therefore, prilled urea is cheaper to use and safer.

Urea supplies 2.87 grams of crude protein per gram of urea (46% nitrogen).

Protein meals

Extra protein may be required for extra animal performance. Vegetable protein meals are used for this role. These can be used up to 40% protein. Cottonseed and copra meals are commonly used. The recommendation is to use the cheapest protein meal available.

Salt

When required, salt rectifies the low sodium levels in molasses.

Phosphorus

Dicalcium phosphate (DCP) and technical grade monoammonium phosphate (MAP) are the most commonly used concentrated phosphorus sources included into molasses-based production supplements.

Good luck with the the cattle venture.  I for one would be very cautious as it is nearly impossible to get a positive return on such a small scale.  But I do like the look and smell of cattle roaming around.

Thanks again. I want locally available cattle feed / feed supplements that I can either load on my truck or get delivered without paying for 300Km transport. I am not going to be breeding Friesians / Holsteins but whatever breed of Thai cattle it is that I find tomorrow night and that my son in law is accustomed to looking after, so won't need anything exotic like cottonseed and copra.
In my experience over three years we can raise these cattle with little veterinarian fees, feeding them 99% with feed from our farm plus occasional supplements. We were making about ฿10  to 15 000.- per farm born calf raised for 15 months.
Covering by a bull costs around ฿300.- plus a bottle of Lao kao.
I wish to increase yield and speed up the process a little as well as having 10 to 15 beasts instead of the present 3 to 7. I won't earn a fortune but it will help the SIL tremendously. I am aware that it will take three years or so to build to the point of making a profit.

I keep some cows as a bit of a hobby.  My business model is pretty similar to yours.  I agree it will take around 3 years to see a return.  I have 14 cows of breeding age plus some calfs born in the last year or so.  Most of them are looked after by a herdsman offsite who takes them out to graze every day.  In addition, we keep 2 expensive high end long eared type cows at home.  These are fed almost exclusively (with some supplements) on shredded corn veg that we buy in.  About 30 baht a bag and lasts for a month or so stored in air tight bags - we take delivery once a month for a small charge.  Let me know if you are interested in their contact details.

I used to have a Poll Hereford stud in the Snowy Mountains area of New South Wales.  I remember with fond memories the quiet solitude but wonderful times astride my horse watching my cattle graze. My valleys were a rich green in colour, surrounded by a large mature forest of gum trees with trout streams running through them.   My nearest neighbours were about 4 km from my property boundary.  It's great to have a hobby and for those currently with cattle or considering starting a herd I wish you luck but I especially hope you enjoy them as they are more than just a commodity.

Does anyone know a stockist, or where we might be able to purchase second hand, a Chaff cutter?  Either electric or engine driven. My brother in law has a small herd of about 12 cattle,
And is currently chopping their food by hand a very time consuming task.
