American actor David Carradine has been found dead in a closet in a hotel room in Bangkok.

Police have not confirmed whether he took his own life or was murdered.

The naked body of the 72-year-old actor was found by a housekeeper in a closet in room number 352 of Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel in the Lumpini area at 11am yesterday.

Lumpini police said the body of Carradine was found curled up inside the wardrobe with one end of a shoelace tied around his penis and the other end fastened around his neck.

Both of his hands were bound with a cord which was also tied around his neck, said an officer at the station who requested anonymity.

Forensic experts said Carradine had probably died between 12 and 24 hours before his body was found.

They said there were no injury marks on his body and no evidence of a struggle having taken place in the room. Mysteriously, a footprint found on the bed did not match the shoes worn by Carradine.

There was a glass of water in the room. Experts were checking to see if the drink had been tampered with.

Police refused to give further details, saying they needed to gather more evidence to determine the cause of death.

Carradine was in Bangkok to star in a new movie, Strand.

He arrived with a film crew in Bangkok and checked in at the hotel a few days ago.

He rose to fame in the TV series Kung Fu, which ran from 1972 to 1975, playing Kwai Chang Caine, a monk and martial arts expert who roamed the American West.

He went on to win a Golden Globe best actor award for his role in the movie Bound for Glory, the life story of folk singer Woody Guthrie, in 1976.

He also starred in the Quentin Tarantino films Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2, made in 2003 and 2004.

The Kung Fu and Kill Bill star was found with a noose around his neck and another rope around his genitals in a wardrobe in his hotel room in Bangkok.

Police commander Lieutenant General Worapong Siewpreecha said it was unclear whether the 72-year-old killed himself or died from suffocation or heart failure due to ejaculation.

"There was a rope tied around his neck and another rope tied at his sex organ, and the two ropes were tied together and hung in the closet," he said.

"Under these circumstances we cannot be sure that he committed suicide but he may have died from masturbation."

Forensic experts suspect the sexual practice, also known as ''breath control play'' or ''scarfing'', was the cause of his death.

According to wikipedia, erotic asphyxiation refers to intentionally cutting off oxygen to the brain for sexual arousal.

Various methods are used to achieve the level of oxygen depletion needed, such as a hanging, suffocation with a plastic bag over the head, self-strangulation such as with a ligature, gas or volatile solvents, chest compression, or a combination of these.

The practice can be dangerous even if performed with care and has resulted in a number of accidental deaths.

One study puts the mortality rate range of auto-erotic asphyxia at between 250 to 1,000 deaths per year in the United States.

Most known erotic asphyxial deaths are male. The mean age of accidental death is in the mid-20s, but deaths have been reported in adolescents, and in men in their 70s.

Deaths often occur when the loss of consciousness caused by partial asphyxia leads to loss of control over the means of strangulation, resulting in continued asphyxia and death.

In an article written in the Independent in 1994 by Celia Hall, erotic asphyxiation was described as extremely dangerous. Doctors said anyone planning to indulge in it should immediately seek sexual counselling.

She quoted American psychologist Michael Apter in her article as saying that erotic asphyxiation was ''the most dangerous sex game in the world''.
