The Wife and I will be back in LOS in Oct, and will do the usual and buy new "pay as you go" Sims on arrival.
what is the procedure for registering a new Sim, do they do it at the 7/11 for you?

If you buy a sim card after 31st July the retailer will register it for you.

As far as I know you cannot use a passport. You need a Thai ID card number.

Telewiz wanted the 13 digit ID card number. My sim is now registered in my daughter's name. I was surprised that was allowed as she is only 13.

Prepaid SIM Card Registration Extended Until August 31

For those who haven't yet able to register their cellular mobile prepaid SIM card last July 31, you will have until August 31 to finally register your sim card otherwise you could not receive and make calls anymore.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has extended sim card registration for another 30 days starting August 1 to August 31.

Secretary General Thakorn Tanthasith of the NBTC said however that anyone holding unregistered sim card could receive calls but could not make calls during this month of August. Only emergency numbers 191 can be called during the extended period. After the expiration date your sim card will be totally nonfunctional.

The secretary said that only 68.8 million from the 85.5 millions prepaid users have been able to registered the July 31 deadline.

The registration of prepaid sim card is about security reasons because many criminals have been using mobile phones to trigger bomb especially in the south, he said.
