New Thai Consulate Savannakhet
« on: May 25, 2014, 10:03:52 AM »
Was in Savannakhet 4 days ago. Drove past brand new Thai Consulate as I was leaving town on Day 2.

It's on the main road coming from the bridge into town, but before you get to the bus station.

So it's a completely different location to the existing Consulate, about 3km I guess. Farangs who like to book accomm close to the existing Consulate may need to rethink their choice.

The tuk-tuk guy said "open velly soon ... udder one finish".  No more detail available. Sorry about that.

Unfortunately, I didn't see the new Consulate when I was coming into town on Day 1, as I could easily have asked the staff at old Consulate for more details and had a little wander to get some photos.

So ... on your next trip to Savannakhet ... don't be too surprised if the tuk-tuk guy drops you at a new location.

Currently tuk-tuk is 200 baht from bridge to existing Consulate, but the new Consulate is only half the journey, so perhaps a bit cheaper is reasonable. Good luck !!

On a slightly different note ... took my girlfriend over to Lao with me. Was nice for her to see the "other side of the river"
She has no passport, so there was a bit to do at Thai Immi first. No probs and was easy. If you are considering doing a similiar thing, then PM me and I can give you some helpful tips beforehand.

Anyone been to Savannakhet recently ?

Is the new Thai Consulate open yet, or are they still using the old one down by the river ?

Just curious, as it may be useful to know for anyone going there.

The new one is open. It opened in about October.

I have heard from a couple of people that things are very smooth(2).

Same day service in operation.
