For UK passports holders , you do NOT have to go back to Bangkok to pick your passport up.. you can nominate anybody aslong as you sign a Declaration  and give them the receipt to show...

You have to go to Bangkok to renew your passport now.. sending copies is not the way nomore... you turn up in person show your old passport then your allowed to keep the old one til the other arrives... Its all done back in the UK now.. so nomore Hong Kong, singapore or wherever.. Total x up thats why they have a massive backlog..

Quite right Toffo, and a complete cock up so far.

The point still stands though. A copy of your passport is enoughwhen applying in Thailand (Bangkok) where as your original passport is needed when applying in Singapore, for example.

Does the nominated person collecting your passport need to be a British national?

It seems the HMPO are going back into the dark ages with this new system....  my passport arrived 2 days before my marriage extension had to be applied for again.. I was one of the lucky ones, many have lost their Holidays and lots of money.. Its a total shambles...

Thai law says you must carry ID and NOT only a passport. Life is simple when laws are enforced correctly and not broken

Nobby, you have a link for that?   I would like to have it as backup.
Thanks.
post 114 is as concise as I have seen but nobody seems to be able to say yea or neigh categorically

Thanks for that.

However, I have over 50 years experience dealing with US and/or Foreign militaries.  If the checkpoint is ordered to verify foreign passports and restain those that do not have it, regardless of the law, rule, regulation, etc, you don't have a passport you will almost certainly be stopped.  Military are not police, they have different views, and during a coup it is not a good time to challange whether the military is violating the law.

So for the forseeable future I plan to carry my passport when traveling out of Buriram city.  A minor inconvience.

Toally agree Urleft... Soldiers are going to follow orders... That''s what they're trained to do... For the time being, it would be very prudent for everyone to just carry their passport with them whenever they travel... I have 40 years of govt and military service and have been in and out of here a number of times during that period.. Go with the flow for now.. It's either that or you can test their resolve and take your chances on being sent back to your home country... The police are one thing but the military is not the group you want to play barracks lawyer with...
