Special airline deals to, from Thailand

Special airline deals to counter the flu
By The Nation

International airlines are offering special fares in and out of Thailand to stimulate spending, especially since most tourists are staying home due to the swine-flu virus.

Qantas/British Airways is offering return economy-class tickets to Australia (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide) from Bt15,590 and London from Bt23,650, provided they are booked for travel on or before June 30.

All fares exclude airport tax, service fees, insurance, fuel and other surcharges. Tickets are for a maximum 12 months' stay.

Northwest and Delta Air Lines are offering special deals to New York and Salt Lake City, though tickets need to be booked before June 21, with departures before June 30. A round-trip economy-class ticket from Bangkok to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Portland starts from Bt20,000, and Bangkok to Salt Lake City is priced at Bt26,500.

Fares to Atlanta, Boston, Miami, Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland, Minneapolis/St Paul, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and other cities costs Bt28,000, while a trip to New York starts from Bt32,400.

Pandit Chanapai, executive vice president, commercial, at Thai Airways International (THAI), said the airline is launching five direct flights a week to |Oslo on Airbus A340-500 aircraft from June 15. During the introduction period, the airline is offering special fares starting at Bt25,805 for economy, Bt57,695 for premium economy and Bt100,645 for Royal Silk class. Tickets need to be bought before July 31 for departures by the end of August.

Royal Orchid Plus members get double mileage if they travel on THAI's Royal Silk class, while premium economy travellers accrue 1.5 times the actual miles.

THAI is the first airline in Southeast Asia to operate direct flights to Oslo, bringing the airline's network in the Scandinavian market to a total of 19 flights a week.

Hi Admin and BE readers,

As a very frequent flyer I must forewarn you about the "Incredible deals" that many airlines are offering ............ always read the small print, especially on Fare Restrictions.

Two examples of things being not always what they seem to be.

1st example -  I just booked my daughter and her partner to visit me on Etihad later this year. The initial special deal from UK to Bangkok was advertised at GBP 295 per adult...............EXclusive of taxes and surcharges, take a look at the full fare (2 persons):-

Delivery Option   Your ticket is an e-ticket.

Total price
Fare Details   Fare                       Tax                          Total
2 Adults             GBP 590.00     GBP 412.00        GBP 1,002.00

2nd example - I fly Etihad quite a lot. There are currently some very special deals on between Bangkok and Abu Dhabi and other locations. The Business Class fares seem very attractive, even once you take in taxes. However look at fare restrictions.............if you try to change the date of your reservation once booked, there is a restriction in that you will have to pay 35% of the initial fare to reschedule your date.

So always be careful with the so called cheapies, it can end up costing you a lot more than the normal "open ticket" if your dates of travel are not in concrete.

Hope this helps...............RayBan

As a further addition for those of you interested in breakdown of air fares, the above tax and surcharge figure of GBP-412 breaks down like this:-

Tax Details
GBP 264.00  YQAC - Fuel Surcharge
GBP 100.00  GBAD - UK Air Passenger Duty
GBP 20.20  UBAS - Passenger Service Charge
GBP 27.80  TSLA - Thailand Domestic Psgr. Service

The fuel surcharge is the most annoying, this is usually how they keep the initial advertised fares look relatively low by hiding this in the "Tax" section. It really is the way most airlines clandestinely increase their seat fares these days and this fuel surcharge has risen steeply these past 18 months.

Take care all and have a good flight!!!!!!!!!!!  8) RayBan
