New in Buriram
« on: November 01, 2013, 07:06:43 PM »
Hi all
I just moved to Buriram 3 weeks ago and will be living here for the next 3 years or so and just to take it away from the beginning, no i am not married to a girl nor in a realationship with one from Buriram, just came here for my work.
Now of course there's always a few important things to know when moving to a new place so i have some questions on different topics, which i hope you guys can answer me.

1. I need to make a driving license (not just change an international license to a thai license). I know this topic was discussed in this forum before but most posts are quite old so it would be nice to get an update on where can i make the test? is the test available in english? what is required to make the test?

2. I am looking for a good laundry, reliable and quick service, pick up and drop off would be a plus.

3. Also looking for a reliable cleaning service or maid to clean my apartment once or twice a week.

4. Need to find a furniture store to completely equip my apartment, was in home pro but the selection there is less then satisfying.

5. need to rent a motorbike to get easier around, of course without the license this might be a bit more difficult but when i lived in pattaya and samui before moving here i never had to give my license to rent a bike. any ideas?

Your help in these matters is highly appreciated, thanks a lot in advance.

Ice furniture who have an advert at the top banner can help with furnishing your place.
As for the driving licence, you can get bike or car licence by doing a simple test at the government office out on the Prakon Chai road on the left about 1km past i-mobile stadium. Best to go have a chat and see what they require.
If your here for 3 years then buy a motorbike as renting does not make sense. Also a licence would more likely be required to rent than to buy.
I am unable to advise on laundry or cleaning services but I would suggest you ask locally to where you are living.

Good luck.

I asked around in Buriram for a laundry when I first came here, and was laughed at! So we had to buy a washing machine....

A good place too start looking for a laundry would be the road where the Expats office is. Travel down that road with expats on your left. At the T junction turn left. Follow the road around to the right and keep going. There is a village there that has loads of apartments. Good chance there will be a couple of laundries there too.

look at this thread:

http://www.buriramexpats.com/forum/index.php/topic,363.45.html

I got a 5 year in Feb, so it is basically up to date, and about the same for a year, expect a 1 year is cheaper.

If you have an International Driver's Permit (IDP) with motorcycle you won't have to take written test or view the class.

@ urleft
thanks a lot for that, this detailed thread is exactly what i was looking for. Just 1 Question, you mention a police report? Never had one but i assume i just go to the police station and tell them i need a report for a drivers license, is that right?

The letter from the police that basically says you are residing in Buriram and have logged your details with Buriram police. You may need proof of address from your landlord. The process is free and costs you 200baht TIT.

Welcome to Buriram  sawadi

As you asked the question:

1. Driving license, you have to go about 08.00 am to the Transportation office as Alan told you.
Prepare 2 copies of your passport, document from the doctor, document from the police and money about 100+ baht. Take a motorcycle.
(You have to accompanied with your landlord to police station)

2. We know one laundry service opposite Electricity office on the way to Kumuang, they do pick up and drop off in Buriram City also.
If you want please let us know where is your apartment and your phone number in the message box or you can go to see them at the shop.

3. Here is a girl we know, she want to do cleaning job. We will talk in message box.

4. Ice furniture is a good choice and you have Home Mega Mart, Thai Wassadu and small shops near to the day market in the city.

5. If you will be here for 3 years, buying is the best choice. Expats can be owner of the vehicles.
Or if you want to rent as temporary you can see this page and contact us by phone or mail.

Try Alans way first give the local police a shot at your certificate of residency if that does not work then its a trip to Kap Choeng Immigration and M&D Coffee for a letter..and your medical should not cost over 30 baht.

Which office did you use?

The rules vary between districts. The office on the road to Prackonchai, near to the football stadium, accept letters from the police.
